I like the 2nd a little better but the background in the first image is not distracting to me.

Thank you, Ken. I think the placement of the flower makes a big difference and it would have looked strange with the background flowers I think.

I like your re-edited version. It's much more striking to me with no background interference and places the emphasis directly on the color and interesting shapes of the flower. I also like your repositioning to the angle, I think it adds more drama. Nicely done. Bev

Thank you, Bev. I think changing the placement of the flower was the most important part of the edit for me.

Carol, there is a tremendous difference, and it all depends on what you want the viewer to see. If you are going for a natural look, then the original tells its story better. If an artistic look, then the edit. Only you can decide. By the way, nice work on both.

Thank you, John. I enjoy flowers and I like for them to look elegant. Guess that’s why I like the simple dark backgrounds so much.

I like the edited version. The yellow on the black background is really nice.

Though both are very nice renditions. I definitely prefer the your edited shot ( 1st shot). I am a sucker for black backgrounds. I think the slight slant of the flower adds to the presentation.

Thank you! It's funny how a photo can look OK when you first finish processing then not look right next time you look at it. I felt this one needed work as soon as I posted it in the gallery.

Thank you, Frank! I agree. I think the slant did it for me but without changing the background it would have looked off.

Yes, I like to call it a marinading editing process. Many times after I’ve spent time doing edits I save the image as a PSD and let it marinate for a day or two. Then I come back to it with fresh eyes. Sometimes it’s just a matter of tweaking a few layers, other times it’s a total trash and complete work over.

Interesting, viewing #1 when my eyes move there is a ghost "after image" impression of the bright flower on the black.

I guess it is because it is bright and the background isn't. I just looked at your thisandthat and it is fun.

The Diagonal composition is superior.
