I see all these new expensive cameras ..
especially the four thirds etc and notice how
ugly they look ..

Brutal designs , harsh square lines and corners.
Plastic looking ... dont look like high quality cameras at all .

Panasonic , Sony , Fuji .. are the worst .
They look ' cheap and nasty ' but are ' Expensive and nasty '

The DSLR so far have kept with good traditional lines ..

Sorry my friend but I have to disagree. For looks and feel my Sony RX10IV feels quite similar to my DSLRs. My friend’s Canon R5 also feels and looks similar as well. I do notice a change in better photos though. No problem here though. We all get different experiences with newer products. You are of course welcome to your thoughts and opinions.

Yes , exactly .
Cars seem to have lost the flair of design of the 60's / 50's / etc..

Cameras of the 70's were of of Icon quality ... OM1 . Nikon F , as well as
the Japanese Rangefinders of that era ..

Will a Panasonic / Lumix G8 be seen as a Classic in 40 years time ?
I doubt it .

Why is it necessary to make a blanket statement about “ugly”? It is in the eye of the beholder. If you do not like the esthetics, don’t buy it, or use it, or marry it.

I also disagree. My Olympus bodies are among the most beautiful cameras I ever owned.

As I see things...if you don't like the looks of your camera, take pictures with it, not of it.

It's the 50 year marketing cycle...retro from the 70's is back in vogue...one last time.

Same with stereo equipment...except that those old units can still get up and go as opposed to photography (relatively speaking). I wish I had kept my old gear...it would be worth a small fortune today...the kids can't buy them fast enough.

"Form follows function" has long been an aviation paradigm which is why you don't see square nosed planes with sharp angles. The lunar lander was pretty ugly but it was beautifully designed for its intended use and achieved rather amazing results.

To me, cameras are a piece of equipment designed to maximize their function and ease of use, not to be a piece of artwork. I see the beauty in a camera in its amazing capabilities, ergonomics and efficient placement of all necessary components in order to provide the best results.

Hey, Luke. I don't agree with you, and I don't disagree with you. The physical appearance of a camera. being attraceive, is one's own personal preference.

Perhaps more important is how the camera performs?

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I found DSLR's are among the worst looking cameras. The Fuji are good looking. The Olympus are decent looking. The older Panasonic are good looking but I don't like the look of the GH series much.
