I'm interested in which Nikon DX lenses members find best suited to general photography i.e. bit of landscape, bit of portrait, bit of action and anything else which pops up in the viewfinder - those sometimes referred to as walk about lenses. I just sold my 18-300mm as I was finding it too heavy and I'm looking for something lighter maybe with better IQ. Checking the 20,000+ shots I've taken with various Nikon APS-C cameras over the last 23 years I find over 75% to be at less than 140mm (210mm 35mm Eq.) so I'm thinking smaller lenses anyway.
By the way I DO NOT want links to various web sites giving reviews. I can find those myself quite easily. I want real life opinions not paid for "reviews"
Cheers JohnR

1. It will work on your camera but....
2. It isn't the lightweight you're looking for.
3. It will give you (approximately) the equivalent of a 48-480mm lens on an FX camera. No wide angle at all. Maybe great for photographing birds.
4. ....and (this is disputed by some on this forum) it isn't the sharpest lens on the block. No need to get into it with anyone who disagrees. That would take away from the purpose of the thread. I just wanted to comment on the recommendation.

I have used Nikon 18-200 lenses (wore one out) for my festival photography for over ten years.
For a slightly higher quality file I carry the 16-85 when I am in more of a scenic mood. Both provide good 13x19" prints from my Canon printer when I do not crop much.
I have read that the 18-140 Nikkor has equal sharpness to the 16-85, but more distortion. It would seem perfect for you if you do not do much architectural photography.
I have numerous other lens for specific purposes, but use none of them for general carry.

Mine was a Tamron 18-200 that got sold with my D7100.
Currently using a D7200 with a Nikon 18-135 which has a better IQ but less flexibility. Given a good deal I will buy the Tamron 18-200 again.

Here is a photo taken with the Tamron 18-200 lens-Nikon D7100.

It's kind of expensive but the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 is a good DX lens I think.

IMO fast and good glass is heavy. MY walk around dx lens for my d500 is the 18 to 300 at 19 oz has issues at the extremes if I don't stop it down. If you want light and good your options are limited. Checking Nikon USA shows no lens that meets light weight and the focus length you want.

My surprise sharpest lens (outside the trinity) is the 24-85. It is an “FX” lens, but I use it on my d5200 all the time. It is fairly light, gives a decent zoom range, is not too expensive, and it super sharp.

The lens I like to use with my DX camera (D7000) is the 18-70 f3.5-4.5 AF-S lens. Mine had issues with its AF and stopped working so I use it in the Manual Mode. The 18-200 VR offers more range and it is a very good all around lens.
Both lenses are pretty sharp for my needs.

I used the 17-55. 2.8 it’s lightly on the heavy side but this lens didn’t feel heavy because it’s nice balance and I liked how it fit in my hands with the 7000 and 3400. It’s a solid, nice fine mechanics and easy to use.
If you want something cheap and light the old kid lens 28-80 3.3- 5.6 it’s plastic, focus is accurate, loud.
I worked through the pandemic and I lifted more boxes ever but I got more muscles back and I can hold way easier my camera now than before. Just saying

I used the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm lens when I was shooting with my D7100. It is a decent lens--it has a good focal range, is not very large and also not very heavy.

I chose the Nikon 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 DX lens as my choice for general use. It is quite sharp and covers the full-frame equivalent of 24-120 mm. For me, that is about 95% of what i shoot. I also have a Tamron 100-400 mm lens (that one is a FX lens but works just fine) and the Nikon 85 mm DX macro lens. If I have to choose just one, that is always the 16-80 mm lens.

Nikon 16-80 mm DX VR f/2.8 could be the one you need for travel.
