Noticed that, eh?

But they probably get batteries at K-Mart for their car.

Actually when I just had to get a new battery for my Subaru, the top rated one at Consumer Reports was the brand sold at Walmart!

How about that... I wonder who makes it for them.

Actually it's supposedly Johnson Controls, who also make Interstate batteries. But it was about half the cost of a Subaru-branded battery from the dealer, and about a third less than an Interstate.

Works fine, lasts long time.

USING 2 OEM & 1 Wasabi all work equally good, I shoot 5-6 days a week and rotate them, can not see any difference
in how long they last or how long it takes to recharge. The Wasabi battery worked ok but the charger never worked.

I bought a Nikon Z7 and after 2 days the battery failed (Nikon battery) I complained to Nikon and they wanted the serial number of it and a photo of the offender. It took them 2 weeks to send another one, from the service depot here in Canada . In the meantime I ordered a replacement from Amazon and got it in 2 days. (after market and it is still going)

I need to buy an extra battery for a Nikon D750. Battery is EN-EL15 or EN-EL15A. The OEM Nikon battery is quite expensive ($69 at B&H).

There are other suppliers through Amazon that have better prices and are likely good batteries. One is Wasabi (2 for $26) another is a no-name, but highly rated (1 for $17).

Are after-market batteries worth buying? Any recommended brands? Thanks!

I've been using Wasabi, Watson and Kastar batteries for over 10 years without a problem. The charger/battery packages make them even a better deal.

Even on UHH (where many have a fetish with OEM gear) I have yet to hear of any such disaster caused by an aftermarket battery.

I have never suffered a "catastrophe" as the result of using a 3rd party battery. But I have had two ProMaster batteries bought at my local camera store. One was an EN-EL3 (D300 & others), and one was an EN-EL15 (D500, D810, D850). Both powered their cameras fine, both had observedly less capacity, both suffered relatively fast shelf life discharge, neither communicated exactly right with the camera.

For me, the little bit of money saved was nowhere close to the perpetually ongoing annoyance.

I have them in both my cars and will replace them every 3 years whether I need them or not. It's cheap insurance considering batteries always fail at the worst time.

Kastar has been my go-to for Sony batteries for years, and now recently YXwin, both from Amazon.

Our third party battery doesn’t last as long as the Canon batteries

I never measured how long mine last.
On some outings my camera is on, at the ready (idle), for longer periods than it is for other outings.
To really measure their charge longevity, total camera on time has to be known, not just number of photos.
(Unless one turns the camera on, takes a photo, turns the camera off, ...turns the camera on, takes two photos, turns the camera off, .....)
I just replace them when they are drained and put them on the charger when I get home.
Life if simple.

With my dozen digital cameras, I have to buy and charge many batteries. If the no-name batteries have a listed capacity the same as the OEM---I have never had a problem with short life. I buy what is cheapest and listed as new on eBay. Possibly most come from the same pot?----ew

Thank you all for commenting! Based on your replies, it seems the generic batteries are worth a try. And, I think I will go with the Wasabi brand. Thanks, again…

My issue with after-market batteries stems from my engineering background. We always played what-if games. So, we have an after market battery in a multi-thousand-dollar camera. The battery swells to the point of getting stuck in the camera or to the point of rupturing and depositing its innards in the camera.

In that scenario, arguing with the OEM camera manufacturer is going to be a very steep uphill battle. If an OEM batter did the same, the discussion might go a bit easier.

Sure, there are some who will testify that they never had a problem with after-market batteries. But, all it takes is one and flush one's camera down the drain.

Does your “what if ?” include the third party strap causing a camera to fall into molten steel ?

Enquiring minds want to know.
