I used a time machine copy of all my imaged and copied ALL my old LR photos over over to my new computer. The date that the images were saved because of the way save my data. My memory is still good enough that I can tell by looking at the photo where and who. It will take me a longe time to recreate all new key search terms/words, but the result with be worth it.

I noticed that if I assigned a "star" rating to a photo, that rating, was preserved.

Some of the photos was taken with an old film camera and later scanned and digitized. The meta-data was lost long ago. For the other photos where I still have the Raw images, the meta data is preserved in the image file.

I'm attaching an old photo taken with a Konica film camera and a 57mm f/1.2 lens. I know that because that is still my favorite lens, and I have owned many. I could not take a bad photo with lens!

So where do you stand on the migration process? From that list of all / multiple LRCAT files, if you update the display to show the details and then sort by modified date, the newest file (probably / possibly the v11) should be the LRCAT to migrate to the new computer. Taking that single file would seem to be the only needed step rather than starting over.

The migration process is going slow! There are a few photo where I can't remember exactly where I was when I took them. I still think it's better to re-construct LRCAT file because my old ones had some bad errors.

It took me to catch on to LR and I made some stupid mistakes. I'm retired and this will keep me amused on some cold winter nights. Now I know to only modify LR photo from within LR! I screwed my old LRCAT files up in the past.

Rebuild? Why?

If your catalog was 'good' on the old machine, it will be the same way when copied over and onto the new machine. Your time is your time, but there's no reason to rebuild something that simply needs to be copied from one machine to another.

But it was NOT good! There were a lot errors caused by me.

Maybe I missed something in the earlier comments, but "what errors"?

What is a LR catalog?

Ans:

a) a pointer to the original image file by a fully qualified drive and folder location and file name, ex: c:\picture\file1.jpg
b) a history of all actions on that image, both import / export and all the editing
c) image technical metadata (EXIF) and user-created keywords and virtual organizations into collections

So, if you have an LRCAT file that has all this information already, what could possibly be 'in error' and what could possibly justify attempting to manually recreate this data?

My super duper 16" MacBook arrived and I'm selectively moving everything from my backup disk over to the new computer. It took six hours to transfer all my images into the new computer!

The images all came over in giant clump. All keyword have been lost. The indexing has been lost. What is the name of the indexing data and can I recover it?

I now have all my images in the huge SSM of my computer. Yes it's fast but all that work I put into indexing by key words has been lost.

Are all your photos in same name directories and drive? If so copy your lightroom catalogue to the same directory on your new drive. Also your presets.

Since you do not know this might help. Once you see where they were, copy them from the old drive to identical locations on me drive.

Years ago when my wife was the head librarian at a MI library she had the same problem. I finally figured out how to do it but I couldn't tell you how I did it to save my soul. I just know that it can be done. GOOD LUCK! Harry

Be sure you get a cable for that drive that's as fast as the components on either end. I moved to an M1 Mac Mini recently and bought a 1TB external SSD to use as the Photo drive. As I recall, there was a lot of variability in the actual throughput of the connector cables available out there - just because they have USB-C ends doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna be fast. You have to look a the fine print to be sure what you're actually ordering..

Thank you for the warning. I'll buy my cable at the Apple Store. I had no idea that cables could vary in speed! I have been thinking of driving into the Apple store anyway to get some help. So far I have not been able to get my iCloud working. I need to get that working to get the latest versions of LrC, PS, DxO, Topaz, Etc.

I'm working with an old Intel version of LrC and it's very snappy. When I get the M1 chip version it will be even faster!

Edit:

I just noticed that the external SSD that I ordered comes with two cables. One is USB-A and the other is USB-C.
I ordered the 2TB version of the SSD.

Well, start with the USB-C cable that come with the drive. You probably will find that it's just fine.
