It looks like you're planning to drive down NV-93 from Ely. I drove north up that road a couple of months ago. I found Ely to be a bit of an odd town and did not want to spend more time there than necessary. Best to fill your gas tank there. On the other hand, I stopped at Cathedral Gorge, near Panaca, and really enjoyed that. It's small, so it's manageable, and it is a very interesting state park. They also have a campground. Pioche, just north of there, is a cute town to drive through if you want to take a short detour and it has a restaurant or two on a long stretch with few services. There is a big gas station just south of Cathedral Gorge.

I agree with others who say to avoid the interstates and take Rt.89.
Secondary roads are always better than interstates.

I recommend these books.

Thanks, I will look into the books but 89 runs thru Utah and I have traveled thru Utah quite a bit...that's why we are taking hwy 93 down thru Nevada.

If you just suffer going through Salt Lake, keep on I-15 and swing over to Springdale and Zion National Park and see us. Between I-15 and Springdale is an area where you can boondock or you could go out to Sand Hollow for some really good side by side areas. There are plenty of areas in Utah for off road experiences.

Thanks and I have traveled thru Utah a lot - already been to Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, St George and quite a few other places. I used to go visit friends in Kanab all the time. So we are staying off of I-15 and going down thru NV instead but thanks for the info!

Twin Falls has some nice areas to photograph. You can take a road down to the Snake River and check out the bridge over the highway. It's the only bridge in the US where you can base jump all year. The flats in the gorge are beautiful with a golf course like no other on the north side of the river.

Awesome...now on my list!

I would take the left instead of the right in southern Idaho. That would put you driving through Utah which is one of the best states for photography.

About Valley of Fire State Park [ http://parks.nv.gov/parks/valley-of-fire ] north of Vegas: You will be traveling from the north on R93. At junction with I15 go north 9-10 miles to get to the turnoff to enther Valley of Fire State Park from the west. If you leave the park going east, you can take R167 to Henderson to make your way to R11 to continue to AZ AND avoid the (almost) perpetual traffic jam where I15 passes thru downtown Vegas the strip area.

NOTE: Ely, NV (R97) is at 6,700' elevation - be prepared for ice/snow. We experienced this on our way to Seattle last October (!). You can save a few miles (and some truck traffic) if you take R6 and then R318 as you leave Ely and then rejoin R93 at Crystal Springs, NV.

Happy travels.

(Just a suggestion :)
