It is common to dislike software subscriptions. What happens if you cancel yours with Adobe?
This morning the daily Tim Grey email tip was answering that question. His introduction summarizes: "You can actually simply suspend your Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, and you'll still be able to import, manage, and export photos in the Library module. You won't, however, be able to update your photos in the Develop module."
Your photos and the LR Classic catalog does not go away! They stay on your computer.
You will be able "to manage your photos in the Library module, including importing, organizing, and exporting photos. You won't be able to work in the Develop module, but you could always export copies of your photos and use other software to apply any additional adjustments."
Tim goes on to explain that you can later activate your subscription again if there is reason to do that, like upgraded features.
He did not explain it, but there are caveats. The subscription is a contract that goes for a year with commitments to pay. Early cancelation may not be cost effective!

The cancellation fee was $52, regardless of how long you've paid into the annual subscription. So, cancelling after the 7th month is not cost effective.
If I was going to cancel my LR subscription, I would plan and prepare. I would do things like:
1. Check the integrity of my catalog and assure I have no missing images.
2. I would update my catalog settings to assure I have XMP side cars created, if not set-up already. If I need to create sidecars, I could select all images in the catalog and add a common (new) keyword value to 'update' all the images, causing the creation the XMP files.
3. I would run a mass-export of all my edited images to their full JPEG resolution.
4. I would assure my customizations / presets are stored in the same file as the LR Catalog, an LR preference setting.
5. I would back-up the entire \Lightroom folder containing the LRCAT file. I'd assure I have a secure back-up of the original images and that fresh export of edits from item #3.
If I thought I would change to a new software, I would have downloaded all the candidates and tested and selected the replacement before I stopped the subscription. I would have transferred the legacy images, all the edited versions and possibly all the originals, into the new library manager of the new software and confirmed the transfer.
Why would you want to cancel?

I don't. But, it seemes that some fear they will lose control of their digital photography because they don't "own" their software. It seemed worth a topic!
Did you know if you are a user of Lightroom CC (the cloudy one) you have a year to copy your images off off Adobe's servers after if you cancel?

Actually I pay for the subscription for Photoshop. Lightroom is the bonus. And it serves me right for saying that. Just a minute ago when I attempted to open Photoshop I got the attached. Tried 3 times. No good.
THIS is what makes me feel like I should cancel. Im not going to cancel, but it make me angry when a software company breaks the software I pay to use.
The CC app makes it very easy to "roll" back from the band new 22.0 to 22.5.2 version you had last week.
When I did the upgrade to 23 last week, it had a check box for "keep" old 22.5.2 version of Photoshop. Not sure Lightroom works the same, but you can have multiple photoshops on your system.

It's easy to blame Adobe when in fact it is Apple's nonsense that is likely at fault.
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-and-macos-catalina.htmlMac OS X 10.15.7 clearly has some issues. Case of the tail wagging the dog - Apple has to step up and get their stuff together and play nice in the sandbox with ALL the boys and girls.
Hmmm and my understanding is Apple provides developers beta software well over a year ahead of the release date.
And FYI I just got this email from the Adobe support community:
“I'm not on Mac OS but on windows 10 and v 23.0 crash on opening”
https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/p-crash-on-launch-photoshop-23-0-macos/idc-p/12494438#M29445And lastly I identified the problem on my system by deleting preferences. The problem was not enough memory in the GPU. PS2023 works for me now without the GPU. Seems like the installer could check for that, act accordingly and notify the user.
