CO is right Peter... rule of thirds is perfect for your otherwise strong images.
The horizon is low on the left of both images... needs correcting too.
Also I notice a lot of grain. Did you add "film grain" in post or
is that some other artifact?
I have never used the rule of thirds as a precise requirement. I have fortunately always had "an eye for composition" which for me works better than strictly interpreted rules. Just sayin'

I agree mate, "rules are made to be broken"; but there is a time and place,
the rule of thirds though, is made for this image...

photo brings your eye right to the subject. Otherwise you did a great job?
