Yes please download the manual and of course it wouldn't tell you how to set it up for sports. I personally don't think there should be a setup for any kind of photography. Perhaps someone else can help you.

Borrow a lesser camera and steal the settings from the “scene modes”. Or maybe the manuals for (some of) those cameras actually list out all the settings assigned automatically to various scene types. (Camera brand won’t matter for that purpose.)

Finally, commit your setup(s) to the user mode channels for recall. Canon SLR user channels remember everything except your moon sign ;-)

The reason I don't use the scene modes because I have yet know how they work. Didn't care to spend time to find out.

And the other question would be do they do what you want.

Well I guess that they don't do what I want is the reason why I didn't make an effort to find out what they do.

Actually, my idea may help the OP. Like you, I have no idea about scene modes and no reason to find out. I use the same 4 controls for everything and the rest of the camera is just clutter.

But the OP feels challenged by a piece of hardware, for the first time ever. Sooooo, why not ask another piece of hardware how it would handle things ? Can’t be any worse than asking our “online experts”.

Scene modes? Try another lessor camera? No one should ever be kidding around about 1-Series Canon EOS technology.

The entire combined brain power of Canon Incorporated has been embodied in a 1-Series EOS camera. Put a card in the camera, format, and put the camera in P -mode aka (P)rofessional. Mount any EF lens ever created by Canon, point, let the camera lock the DIGIC-driven autofocus and shoot. The camera will almost seem to come alive in your hands with every button and dial positioned like the camera can read your mind.

Your writing is always most excellent but sometimes your reading is lacking. There was no suggestion to try a lesser camera. A lesser camera was indeed mentioned, but for a reason clearly different from actually using it.

Easy-peasy! Whenever I get a new or used dslr camera I just Google "Best settings for a XXX camera." In your case, there's a Mark I, II, and III! Regardless, there are 482 thousand hits but obviously the best ones are on the 1st page! Just about all the leading photography websites, forums and blogs will provide suggestions for each camera setting depending upon the camera's use: landscape, portraits, sports, BIF, wildlife, etc.

Be well! Ed

You can lots of real time help if you join a local camera club, or meet with acquaintance who knows a thing or two about modern cameras. Anyone "in the know" will gladly walk you thru the basics.

Do you use any of the EOS-1D?
