Saw this on another site and thought it was interesting.
I miss thumbing through old magazine ads. When I was just getting into photography I remember thinking I could afford a Praktika SLR. Wound up with a more modern Miranda G for my first.
Feel free to add any others to this. Cheers!
I worked there one summer while I was in college. I was in their shipping/receiving dept in the basement with low hanging pipes that I whacked my head on more often than anyone else!
I remember Peerless, and I started with a Miranda G too.
Argus C3 in the ad, had my Dad's and my uncles, C3's
Thanks for posting this bit of nostalgia. Before wishing for the good-old-days pricing, remember also that $1 in 1947 would be almost $12 today. A $400 package back then for the Leica or Rollei would be close to $5,000 in 2021 dollars.
I remember all those ads in the back of Popular Photography in the 70's. Mostly 2 pages per store.

Could be interesting.... except I can't read it. Print is too small; downloading and using Ctrl+ several times does enlarge it, but also makes the text very fuzzy.
Any chance of reposting as "store original" ?

Was at an estate sale recently and was tempted to buy the Miranda they had (not a G) for nostalgia.
I was surprised how heavy that thing was!
Don’t remember what happed to my G.
Still have one photo I took with it in my portfolio though.

Weren’t they also in the ny daily news along with 42nd street photo.
I had been a customer - great store. Heard the reason for its demise was due to employee theft problems.
Notably absent are Miranda, Minolta, Yashica, Konica, Canon, & Nikon Japanese cameras which had risen into prominence by the late 50s and early 60s. Actually wasn't much available in 1947. Guess that is why my father-in law had a nice Contarex in the 50s.
Wow look at those 1947 prices! I remember even as a kid in the 70s, the Grand Central area had so many camera stores I used to browse in (some would hustle you if they thought you were a tourist!) - Now we have the big retailers B&H (I remember when they were a hole in the wall in lower Manhattan) and Adorama - I don't think Willoughby's still around? Peerless might have existed at a different address I think when I was a kid. I used to enjoy the old camera ads in the back of photo mags, but I used to get frustrated when the prices were all listed as "CALL FOR PRICE"...look how ecommerce has changed things!
When I was about 15 -16 I purchased the Model 56 Wollensak Power-Zoom 8mm Camera with Eye-Matic Spool from their store. I forgot what I paid for it but I'm sure I saved up for it from my after school job. I lived on 73rd St and York. Would take my bike and ride downtown to just walk around in the store.
By the way I'm just about 75 in a few days... Those were the good old days for sure.
