It probably seems dumb to non-baby boomers that razor blades were so disposable. But in the days of Gillette Blue Blades, about 3 shaves were the maximum per blade. Then in the 1960's Gillette introduced stainless steel blades and you could get 2-3 times move shaves per blade.
Razor blades have continued to improve over the years.

I've never heard of it. The precaution hardly seems necessary.

Hotel bathrooms used to have them. Imagine how many blades they accumulated.
Here's an example wall tile; reference for image: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/55/04/e5/5504e513cb113545724f0c3d01bb78f7.jpg

My Dad sharpened double edge razor blades for extended life.
He had a porcelain frog to store them

I get daily emails from The Family Handyman, giving me tips and miscellaneous information. Today, they reminded me about a simple way to dispose of razor blades. They said that in houses built before 1970, it was common to have a slot in the medicine cabinet for disposing of razor blades.

When my aunt and uncle moved into their new house decades ago, one unusual feature he pointed out was the slot for razor blades. Apparently, this was very common up till about 1970.

I have one😲 Since I was a kid, I have never had a problem with stubbled walls😜

I recall the slots , but only remember seeing two or maybe three. My father used an electrice shaver. My step-father used the thin double edged type and invested in a double edged razor stropping mechanism that extended the life of the blades by several shaves. I think that was made by Gillette. It had two metal strips that were pulled out from the side of the mechanism, a blade was placed between them and inserted back into the machine. Then a crank was rotated and the blade was stropped by a curved leather-covered piece. the blade was rotated 180 degrees after each stroke by the leather area.

We’re still in our starter house built back in 1970. Same med cabinet and sure enough the slot is there.

I remember a medicine cabinet with a slot for razor blades when I was a little kid. It was fun to drop them in the slot and have them disappear. Funny how no kid ever sliced their fingers off when handling the double edged blades.
