I get daily emails from The Family Handyman, giving me tips and miscellaneous information. Today, they reminded me about a simple way to dispose of razor blades. They said that in houses built before 1970, it was common to have a slot in the medicine cabinet for disposing of razor blades.

When my aunt and uncle moved into their new house decades ago, one unusual feature he pointed out was the slot for razor blades. Apparently, this was very common up till about 1970.

I used to work with my dad as a carpenter; it’s so much fun when opening a wall to do a remodel to find a stash of hundreds used razor blades. That stopped when people began insulating walls.

I remember it well. We had one in our medicine cabinet when I was growing up.

Hotel bathrooms used to have them. Imagine how many blades they accumulated.
Here's an example wall tile; reference for image: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/55/04/e5/5504e513cb113545724f0c3d01bb78f7.jpg

Not many people use the thin blades that you could slip in the slots any more.

Just think about houses built using balloon construction and the fire breaks being above the blade slot, which they usually were, the razor blade would end up in the basement or cellar.

Yes, that's what the article said. I didn't realize they had gone out of style. I stopped shaving a month ago.

Imagine the poor guy doing a "down to the studs" renovation of one of these old houses. Crack the wall open and a zillion rusty razor blades come raining out...

I still use the "old fashion" razor and blades. I miss not having that little slit in medicine cabinet.

My home was built in 1910 and still has a medicine cabinet with the razor blade slot.

We moved into a new duplex 1968 in an area where some old homes had been torn down. Imagine my shock one day when out in the yard my two year old daughter came from around the house to show me what she had found. Both hands held bunches of single edge razor blades. I was able to talk her into just relaxing her hands and letting them drop rather than me trying to grab them from her hands. Luckily not a single nick or cut.
