Amazes me that those birds can swallow those thorny fish without dire repercussions.

The Armored Catfish is an invasive species in Florida and a growing threat to our Manatee population. This Black Crowned Night Heron is doing it's part to help out. I am sure the catfish does not meet eye to eye with the Night Heron on this matter however. Wakodahatchee Wetlands.
Sony a9, Sony 200-600 mm, 600mm f 6.3, 1/640 sec. ISO 400, extreme crop.

Great capture! That fish should make a good meal, once all of those scaly gill covered and all are subdued! Thanx for sharing.

Bet that Heron's eye REALLY bulge when it tries to get those rigid side spikes to go down the hatch. Yikes! Great shot.

I am always amazed how fish eating birds are able to maneuver, without hands, their catch so that the fish's fin spikes are facing away from their mouth. Mother Nature is awesome.

Instinctive on the part of the bird, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Wood Storks, Tri-Colored Herons and many others all do the same thing, makes it easier to swallow. Just like Osprey turn the catch so it's head first, makes it easier to fly with.
