Nikon is saying the new Z cameras are selling great. bu t they are still losing money . I am thinking about a new z 7ii but it is only 10 ounces less in weight than my d810. I guess MIL cameras are not as light as I expected. Then the weight of the new Z lens and IM heavier than my d810

They aren't selling great. Nikon is still making the majority of their sales from DSLR's...which puts them in a bit of a box.
700 million loss this year...projected 389 million loss next year.
Most of the revenue loss 'savings' will be in manufacturing and labor costs..not sales.

I think they will make it in the end...but only if no more missteps occur.

They are losing the race of technology and wiggle room with Canon and Sony...who both managed a profit.
That means both Canon and Sony have 700 million bucks wiggle room going forward.
Not a trend that Nikon can sustain.

Most I view think they are better!

But I’m annoyed at them for being unable to provide Z50 batteries. 6 weeks and waiting. All sources, including Nikonusa, backordered.

Oh, that is why the new Zs and components are backordered?

Nikon ranks 5th in Mirrorless sales. It's simply not enough to keep them healthy.
Backorders mean nothing. There are many reasons for that...slow production...covid.

Nikon's 2018 move to mirrorless has meant trying to replace DSLR sales with mirrorless sales, but when you don't have anything to go on, releasing a new system and — more importantly — lens lineup is difficult. Nikkei's report on 2019 mirrorless sales suggests that Nikon wasn't nearly as successful as it needed to be. This is backed up by similar results on the domestic front. In short, income from DSLRs continues a long term downward trend, but sales in mirrorless are not making up for the shortfall. There is some serious restructuring going on: closing Chinese factories, shuttering compact camera production, and shifting manufacturing to Thailand. Nikon can't seem to escape from the bottom line — there is not enough money coming in for the costs it is accruing, and the importance of camera sales to the overall business exposes it to significant financial risk.

Yes, Nikon can state record 'Z' sales...easy to say when you started at zero a few years ago...
But they are 5th in the market.
Pan sells more mirrorless than Nikon.

Heading out right now to buy three premium Z-7 kits. Maybe four. I’ll do a last minute check in the shares value to see b if I should stick at three or maybe even bump up to five.

Well, that alone should drive the stock price up another 30%.

The stock price is up because market expectations are they will be getting out of the camera business !

(they many other business lines that are growing and far more profitable).

Ken Wheeler is not the guy to quote about cameras and how good they are. By his own admission, he only used a Z camera for a few days and then made a review on it. He is a known Fuji fan boy, which is fine, Fuji's are certainly great cameras - but he loves hating on Nikon these days in spite of his tattoo.

One of his complaints about the new Z series camera is how bad the memory card slot door is - something that has not proven a problem for me or any other professional photographer that I have ever heard from. In truth, the door is fine.

The Z II's are very good cameras indeed - their one weakness with respect to Canon and Sony is subject tracking and eye AF - which is actually just as good as the others but doesn't engage from as far away. Sony eye AF often front focuses - a problem that the first gen Z's had but has been largely corrected for in the series II cameras.

Read this article: https://www.zsystemuser.com/nikon-z-system-news-and/archives/01-2021.html

Also see the the other articles on Thom's site - he knows Nikon well and has insider information - Nikon is a company with very deep pockets behind them and they are spending just as much on R&D as the others despite popular opinion on the subject. The Z9 camera to be released later this year will be fully competitive with Canon R5 and Sony A1.

Ironically, Tony Northrup (who I think makes good points and often is incorrect as well) made a video comparing the R5 to the A1 and it seems from what he shows that the R5 is the better camera in most respects - certainly for $2500 less.

I think the Nikon Z9 will surprise a lot of people with how well is matches/surpasses features from those cameras, and most importantly it works with the Z lenses which are objectively superior to the competition.

No, it seems that Nikon is not going anywhere - more likely - they are just getting (re)started.

That has been my average on cameras and lenses. I don't buy junk and I take very good care of my gear.

The easiest way to make money as a photographer is to sell your equipment.
