If you’re not sure of the source, why are you quoting it?
It’s UHH tradition. Usually pumps up a member’s infotainment quotient by at least a few notches.

I'm sure I've seen reports of Nikon's impending bankruptcy, at least every other year since I started going on photo forums (~10 years). It's almost as frequent as the reports of Pentax disappearing.
And not ignoring the trajectory of that approaching asteroid :-0

Well, Mac, I am kinda having a friendly conversation with the OP and other friendly UHH people.
When I take a break from my real work I jump to UHH for a few minutes to talk to folks who have the same hobby interests as me. I did not do a deep dive into Nikon finances. Nor do I want to. I went to one source. And I wanted to make sure that folks knew that the data source was a quick look, not me spending a lot of time on it. I think some folks quote one source and take it as fact. The Canon data is good...Nikon is a bit fuzzy because they are not as big, and not as referenced.
So, there you have it.
They do. I read a source (Mike Smith at Fstoppers) that indicated that their imaging division made about 68% of their income. In his opinion, their is a lack of diversification as far as income sources. I think his analysis might be right. I hope not. We shall see.

Why are they loosing so much money
Because they are nice people and selling their cameras to us below cost.

Good question. Sometimes business losses happen in a context that explains the inevitability of this result.

The recent epidemic has caused many to seek better options than cell phone cameras. After the epidemic runs its course will be interesting to see how many continue in their new found hobby. Despite how many continue I'm afraid cameras as we know them will fade from the landscape. Mine, they will have to pry from my cold, dead hands!
Phones are not generally used for studio work, professional weddings, professional family portraits, extreme closeups, wildlife, professional portraits, magazine layouts, catalogs, star and space photography, and many other area's to many to mention.
Yes, snapshots are popular with cell phones, they are easy to use, easy to transport, and do very well in a variety of areas. But they are no match for the high demands of hobbyists, series semi professional, and professional photographers.

Going to lose $720 million dollars this year---Canon to make '$616 million dollars.
Let us, on this site, become more accurate when discussing financial positions of large corporate companies.
In this case, Nikon CORPORATION.
NIKON CORPROATION is a large scientific company with many divisions. If one division is down, it effects the bottom line of the whole, but is not a true picture of the whole corporation.
Nikon is a scientific instrument company with their camera division as one part of the larger whole.
Many large companies have losing divisions, but that does not mean the financial position of the whole company is negative.
Many of Nikons divisions had profits last year, and yes, the Nikon camera division lost money. But to make a statement that the whole is in financial trouble is misleading.
Many posts here have said Nikon is in trouble, they are in fact not in financial trouble.
Your correct title should read, "Nikon Camera Division lost money." Nikon corporation is NOT in financial trouble, in fact, there scientific wing made up for any lose in the camera wing.
Have a nice day and keep on shooting until the end.
I just worry that Nikon will jettison the camera division as Olympus has done.Layed off another 700 workers and the R and D is almost nonexistent. Just trying to put a light on Nikon's camera division problems.
