While correct that COVID-19, being suspended in saliva, etc., it still requires that a N95 mask be properly fitted. If a N95 mask is properly fitted, it actually restricts breathing for the wearer. They're not designed for long term wear, i.e. more than around 15 minutes without removing for a bit, nor are they good for any athletic endeavor.

I worked on a number of IT projects that required dust mask protection, such as clearing cables from wall, floor, and ceiling spaces, and our work rules required N95 masks. The masks actually keep CO2 from fully exiting, and after a while they became a nuisance.

I have been very impressed with the last few responses that show some knowledge and depth of thinking. Now I will give my thoughts from my own personal experience. I am 73 years old which I guess puts me in the vulnerable category.

1. At my age this puts me on my third pandemic, the 1957, 1968 and now the covid.
2. The 1957 pandemic I was too young to realize what was going on and it seemed like life just went on with no locks downs. The 1968 which was the year I got married again life just went on. No body paid any attention to it. Everyone was wrapped up in the Martin Luther Jr. and Robert Kennedy assassinations, the riots and Vietnam war.
3. Those two pandemics played out without much intervention.
4. Both the scientists and politicians have intervened in the Covid 19 and have accomplished nothing but wrecked the economy, caused increase in alcoholism, increase in drug use and depression.
5. Over the years in my career I have worked both with physicians and politicians and have learned that I do not have a lot of faith in them being able to deal with it.
6. I believe when we look back on this we will find that a vaccine (which not everyone will take) better treatments and just let the virus run it course.
7. The mask will do nothing and the social distancing while I think is more effective than mask, with the billions of people we have and to get them to social distance is like herding cats it will not work.

On a further note I have worked in a hospital for 35 years as an finance executive and it was very difficult to get all the employees to take a flu shot which was free. Good luck on getting the population to taking this new vaccine.

This is my ramblings and feel free to disagree

Six feet is not enough. So far as cars are concerned - to be safe, turn off your fresh air heater, the use of which may be the reason for masks in cars.

You haven t been able to turn off the airflow in your car for decades. The government took care of that. All vechiles now have constant ventilation

So the "outside air/recirculate" button on my 2020 BMW M8 doesn't really work? Or my 2017 RAV4? Or my 2018 Kia Optima?

This is page 266 of my M8's owners manual.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you or anyone else but what you are saying simply isn't true.

Federal safety laws require at least 10% outside air. I could be wrong on the number but there is a minimum fresh air requirement to prevent leaking exhaust system CO from accumulating in the passenger compartment.

I understand completely. Lol. The outside air and recirculate do 2 things. Bring in extra outside air and keep more air inside on recirculate. Modern cars have a constant flow of outside air being brought into the cabin. I used to be a technician. I can't remember exactly what year it was mandated but it is a truth. Even on my 1994 325i convertible. I belive it was in the 70s when the almighty goverment mandated it. If you look at your rear door area when you open the doors you will see plastic vents on the older cars in the beginning. They are outside the door seals. These are the exhaust. The air flowing past the car draws the air out these vents that is forced into you car by movement. There is actually an ANSI standred for automobile manufactures that must be met.
