My son purchased me an Af-s Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8e FL ED VR from Amazon.com (new and not a third party on amazon) no US on serial number. My son dished out some bucks for this lens and my concern about the serial number had me calling Nikon USA. This is what I was told, if you purchase from an Nikon authorized dealer and have proof of purchase if it needs repair they will repair and it is covered by it’s 5 year warranty. The lens was on sale but not at an international amount of discount. I did look on B&H and Adorama and looked at serial numbers for this lens and they are not stamped US.
Has anyone in Hog-land heard this?

Did you go on line and register this lens? If it accepts registration by serial # you are OK.

Did you provide the serial number to the Nikon rep?

Yes Robert I did register the lens with no problems and Yes Bob I did and this representative said Nikon actually uses an internal lens serial number and they recycle the outer serial number over time, something else I have never heard.

Only one or two of my Nikkor lenses have a "US" prefix before the serial number. All came with Nikon USA markings on the packaging and have registered on the NikonUSA database without problems. None of my several camera bodies have the "US" prefix.

I just checked my copy of that lens. It has a 6 digit serial number, no US prefix. I purchased it from Amazon last year and registered it with Nikon. Amazon is an Authorized Nikon Dealer.

Amazon serves both itself and as a marketplace for others.
Sold and shipped by Amazon, would qualify as Nikon Authorized. I have also purchased camera goodies from Adorama on the Amazon website.
Always check the sold by, to verify the real seller on Amazon.

Not all US Nikon lenses come with a US in front of the serial number. That has been some years since they did this on every lens. If the price of the lens was the same as B&H and Adorama, then it was probably a US lens. If it was less, it probably was a gray market. Nikonus will not tell you over the phone.
That is why it is always best to buy from authorized dealer.
Check to see if Amazon.com is on the list, you might be pleased. And yes, you will need the receipt, make sure the company listed on the receipt is also a nikon authorized dealer.

Usually, but not always, the "US" is stamped on the box but not on the product...but for a Nikon USA product a black/grey and white warranty Nikon USA registration slip is packaged with the manual....with the same serial number stamped on it (they should match - if not, problem!).

Amazon has a problem with knock-offs--not just in the camera department. It is not always clear what the source of the merchandise is. Items often are offered through Amazon Prime with the note “fulfilled by Amazon.” This specifically means that Amazon handles all aspects of the sale, but that they do that on behalf of a third party and that they do not guarantee the authenticity of the product. Not even the label “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com” is immune to counterfeits. I have not bought anything of value on Amazon in years. I either buy at my local camera store or online at B&H.

Other than not having 'US' stamped on the lens; I don't get it here. Didn't the lens come with the 'Lens Warranty' slip? No questions regarding the US warranty then.

I am finding out all warranty cards no longer look the same from Nikon as the one you posted and I have seen in the past. In this photo of my purchase of the Nikon 200-500 different type warranty card and US clearly marked on lens, Change it happens.
