I had that problem. With the laptop turned of, I used a Q-tip dabbled in isopropyl alcohol and swabbed betewwen the keys. Pipe cleaners are even better. That did the trick.
As others have said, replcement is a possibility. Search youtube for keyboard replacement, naming your brand and, possibly, model number.
If you are lucky enough to have a ThinkPad, download a manual from Lenovo's support site as they commonly have instructions for keyboard replacement.
BTW, an external keyboard works just fine on your lap. but try one with a trackball on it, you will love it. I sit on the bed with the keyboard on my lap and have a hugh TV monitor connected to the puter. (dont need my reading glasses..) perixx is the name onthe external keyboard, I have had it for years....connects via usb cable.. Ed
