I still have my Grandfathers leather strap he used in the 60's. I have kept it conditioned...and it is still very strong. Just make sure it is real leather and not too thin.
Never seen a cowboy gun belt fall off, never saw a saddle fall off a horse, they still use leather today on all cowboy equipment, including a 200 lb cowboy on a bucking horse!!
Leather needs to be cared for. If long time none-use inspect it and apply a leather conditioner. If it gets soaked in a heavy rain, when it dries apply a leather conditioner. The material needs to be kept lubricated.
I find leather straps untrustworthy as they stretch when loaded and wet also they deteriorate in time, you have to look out for that. Can you tell us what is the advantage of a leather strap--Not kidding just want to know.
Just a side note... I have gone away from strapping to both sides of the camera body. I find the straps get in the way. I would suggest you look at straps that attach to the tripod lug instead. The strap hangs below the cam body when shooting.
