I'm not anti-subscription model, just have no interest in using Adobe products without some added administration on my part (VM or Windows emulator). <snip>..

You do not need VM or Windows emulator to run Adobe products. They are native MacOS applications.

Oh, I missed that.  😖

I have considered switching to Linux but I worry about the overhead of having to do my own SysAdmin. I work for a living and my free time is precious.

What photo organizer and re-touching programs do you like for Linux?

Yeah, it was buried in one of my posts, so easily missed.

In an effort not to side track the OP, I'll send you a PM with your questions.

I can do everything I want in my stand alone versions of LR and Photoshop. So it's not worth $240 a year to me.

The cost is $120.00 a year not $240.00

Adobe keeps on adding useful features. Sure, some are better than others and some you will never care about but the product does get better and better. If you stick with those versions from fifteen years ago or even the last non-subscription version you bought, you will be missing out on a lot of knock-your-sock off features and user improvements.

I bet a lot of us can look in our junk drawers and find a lot of white elephants that could have been your Lightroom subscription.

Right now I can afford the $10.61 a month for Lr/Ps subscription even tho I have access to a whole slew of other apps that I will never use. I will probably continue with the Lr/Ps subscription even tho it is way over-kill for my purposes.

It certainly has more than you can ever learn let alone use. Why not post some images on the post-processing forum for suggestions on what tools you can use. I hope you use keywords. That alone makes LR almost indispensable.

Most of what I have learned is by watching Lr video series by Anthony Morganti. I did recently purchase Laura Shoe's video series - 2 CD set. So I am in the process of plowing thru those - slowly. But yes, I have learned enough about Lr over the past 6+ years that I can process a raw file and have it look half way decent. But there is so much about Lr and Ps to know that I will never live long enuf to learn. I am close to 80 and really don't have that many years left before they stuff me in the oven.

I applaud you for your ambition. It will keep you young and going. What helps a lot is to have a good idea of where you are going with your pictures. Once you develop your own photographic sensibility, then you can figure out what tools will get you there. And remember this, photography is a lot easier than making your own fiddles.

I use LR almost everyday and frequently take an image into PS because I think the healing tool works so much better in PS. Given this use, it cost me on average 33 cents per day for the best set of editing tools on the market. To me, it's a real bargain.

If you have ever worked with computer software on the corporate level, you will know that Adobe's creative cloud subscription is a bargain. In the corporate world if you pay $1 million for an initial software license (you still don't own the application) if you want to continue to get updates and user support, your company will pay 22% annual support. In comparison, Adobe CC suite is certainly priced very nicely for the consumer.

Yes, PS tools are better but if you are clever, you can get an awful lot of mileage out of the LR tools. With all we spend and misspend on photography, this is indeed a bargain. I like those people who think they own the software. They are only buying permission to use it. No one wants to say it but more often than not, they are just plain cheap. Also, look at all that free support from Adobe and elsewhere. Try beating that.

I don't know about you but spending $10 a month seems like a waste. There are a lot of photo editing programs on the market that offer excellent features for a lot less. I use Paintshop Pro 2020 but there are lots of other excellent programs on the market.

Yes, making violins is very labor intensive when making them like they did back in the 1700s. But I will say that running the rib stock thru a surface planer sure saves lots of time and you can be guaranteed that the thickness will be uniform throughout.

It seems like a bargain to me to get regular updates for bug fixes, new cameras and OS releases and always have up to date software. But that is an individual choice.

You say spending 120/yr is a waste but if recall correctly Paintshop Pro is not free.

I do not care about the fixes because I never have those problems. About once a year, they introduce a really useful feature and that makes the expense worthwhile. I actually subscribe to the full suite because a use several non-photographic programs. LR has come a long way since I started with 3.
