What is the typical cost for conversions and where should I get them done?

Scan Cafe charges about 19 cents per slide and they have discounts. They took too long with my order, over a month, but they did a good job.

You could try Legacy Box. They are advertised heavily on Rush Limbaugh's show and he backs it.

It really depends on quality, speed, and resolution.

What do you intend to do with the digital files?

It depends on your volume...Are your talking 25 slides or 25,000 slides?

When I had Walgreens Photo digitize a number of c41 negatives I was NOT pleased with the low resolution scans the sent me on a CD. They were barely larger than thumbnails. So, hooked up a slide copier rig and huge improvement. I don't know what resolution Scan cafe produces but I now prefer to do it myself and scan as RAW for the obvious reasons. Kodachrome had a wide dynamic range and doing it myself I can work at getting it right. Doubt that i could afford to pay a service for the extra time some slides needed.

Don is right . A custom lab for a professional quality hi rez digital dupe would charge at least $10 each . Even then as it is subjective you might not be happy with results . Again : D.I. Y.

Someone recommended DigMyPics to me -- they will accept slides in Carousel trays and return them the same way, with the scans in folders named by what is on the boxes. I've not tried them, but I am seriously considering it -- I have a lot of slides in trays.

Wham!

Since you're from Long Island, NY see: https://pictureperfectscans.com/. They are located in Port Jefferson.

Testimonials have been good. Some companies outsource the work and take a bit of time. These folks scan on-premises.

After reading faqs, send a few expendable slides or prints for a test.

Be well. Ed

I had at least ten thousand slides ten years ago, so I purchased a {used} Nikon scanner and went to work. I had to retire sooner than I expected to, but it just gave me more time for the scanning. Between my Nikon scanner and a Plustek scanner I purchased later, I got the job done, even though many of the slides were taken twenty to fifty years ago, so many were "iffy".

Make sure they are professionals at what they do. Recommend Scandigital.
