Hello Dtil2012
Check this site out. See below.
http://www.dolica.com/categories/Tripods-and-Monopods/
I have a lovely Giottos Aluminum 3 sec tripod MT9371 and a Giottos ballhead MH1000-652 (22m lb load both). I have had them out of the case a total of 3 times. It is heavy for me since I injured my back and I will sell them if anyone is interested. The tripod is made like a tank...really well done. I will let them go for $225.00 plus $16.00 postage. I have replaced it with a lighter Benro that I am still not happy with because although lighter, it is not good for holding a 200-400mm lens.

If you take manly pictures you should probably look for a manly tripod. :)

The Gorilla tripod is manly but dont think its good for supporting much.

To start with you need to know the weight of your camera and lens together, because you need one to hold that weight.
My camera and lens together weigh 5 kg so I went for manfretto 055xPROB with the 808 head... I was told it would last me a lifetime. It's very sturdy... I love it.
It cost me $360 with the good quality head.
Good luck hope this helps
I've owned several makes of tripods, including Bogen, Manfrotto, Benro, Oben, Proline, Flashpoint. Most of them were good but some were really light duty. You have to watch that bottom leg in photos. Sometimes its about the size of a pencil compared to the others. So...if your hiking a lot, CF, if not Alum. Traveling a lot, 4 section, not so much, three section. Good ones and bad ones are made in China, Italy and USA. I've pulled the legs apart on several makes. It was not really a problem since I could put them back together and glue the clamps on the legs. Hope you have better luck than I've had.

Go to rogerandfrances.com. He used to post here quite a bit and knows lots about photography - especially tripods.
Take everyone's suggestions and see what is left on sale at Wolf/Ritz.
Hope you find a deal and a half. Craig's list is good also.

Worth a trip just for the hot dogs!
Hot dogs??? Noooooooo don't do it!!! Step away from the hot dogs Newfie!!! They are the worst!!![/quote]
But... I.. can't...stop! (actually, I have the brats)
I recently bought a Sirui from B&H. It is only about 2.5 lbs and folds up to about 15 inches. It is rated at 26 lbs. I plan on finally using it this week. It is a carbon fiber model. I have a heavier tripod by Induro which is also great but I wanted something lighter for my vacation in December to Colonial Williamsburg.
