Using multiple, off camera flashes

Can somebody explain when and why you would use multiple flash units in groups? I assume the groups fire at different times, but I don't know why. Or is it so one group can be at full power, the second group at 1/2 power and the third group at something else. Thanks in advance for the help.

Except for some special effects, like multiple exposures, you would not fire strobes at different times for a shot. Multiple strobes are used for ratio purposes, increased coverage and increased light output, whether organized in groups or not.

The main reason is different power settings. I use three quite often mainly for portraits and they work very well.

Thanks everyone. Somewhere I got the idea that you could delay the flash and I couldn't understand why.

You can delay the flash as you say by dragging the shitter or using rear curtain sync. Many reasons for doing this.....get used to ratios and using a single flash first would be my advice.
