Stupid question, but have you, perhaps accidentally, set AF Activation to AF-On Only and are using the shutter release half-press to focus?

Do a system reset just in case you changed something that you didn't expect to change.
I will go through it all again including a full reset.

Don't forget if you fix it no D850. I'm pretty sure it's fubar. 😂
"...dirty contacts..." this commonly presents as you have mentioned...
That said, on 7 different lenses? not likely...
Another stellar reason why working photographers a.k.a. commercial shooters always have a backup...
In fact I have two Nikon D3x's and D7200's for that very reason... very EZ to compare and contrast one against the other... Showing up on set with a full team and a single camera is not for those who want to retain their client base...
Nikon D500 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Refurbished by Nikon $1,199
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1311631-REG/nikon_1559b_d500_dslr_camera_body.html btw... I purchase only Nikon refurbs... They have actually been through a "real" quality control check...
If you are serious about your photography you would definitely benefit from having two D500's

The camera seems to do everything but actually move the focus ring. It moves the aperture, and makes (focusing noises) but the focus ring does not move. I cannot find anything that might cause this problem, but I may not see something was wrong.
Tried removing and/or changing batteries, cards, modes, two button reset. Tried seven different lenses both FX and DX-no luck.
Nikon is Not accepting equipment for repair due to COVID-19 restrictions, according to the web site. Called, was number 148 in line! No help as my firmware is up to date! Have to wait until conditions improve before sending it out for repair.
Any other suggestions?
My wife is forcing me to exhaust all possible fixes before pulling the trigger on the D850 I have been lusting after.
The critters will not wait (hear the desperation?).
Thanx in advance.

Try the two button reset, also make sure the camera itself is set to auto focus.
My advice
A) buy the 850
B) take Thomas’ suggestion and buy two
C) send me your d500, postage paid. I will dispose of it for you
Edit: As you won’t need the DX lens any more, send those as long as well
In all seriousness, I think your extensive lens swap has ruled out the that aspect, as I strongly suspect these have all been on your camera multiple times. I like the ideas of a) dirty contacts on the camera body, b) switch on the body (i know my D7200 also has a focus switch that I accidentally got once), or a setting issue. A full reset to factory should help with the last, and, while you have tried the first two, would try again. Good luck. (And if it does not work out, I will send you my address for this scrap D500!)
Show this exchange to your wife and go for the 850. Then you will have a backup Nikon repair opens.
I'm not too sure that the "focus ring" moves when the camera body responds to a user initiated focus request via the shutter release button.
It should have the ability to slip so that a user gripping it as they are holding the camera will not impede the focusing operation.
So the real question is this: does the camera/lens combination perform the focusing operation when you request it?
It is assumed that both the body and lens switches are set to auto focus mode and not set to manual focus in either location.

I know this is simplistic but did you check the focus switch on the camera? You didn't say.
and the lens switch too! Did you try a 2 button or full reset. On many of my lenses the focus ring does not move while focusing. Did you make some menu changes prior to this happening? Make sure you didn't disable shutter release, or change parameters. Try in full auto/full manual/PASM etc.. Contact cleaning was mentioned, always a good idea.
another $.02
Be sure you did not set it to back button focus.
I see an 850 in your future!

My concern exactly.
see if taking the battery out and then turning the camera on for 1 minute and then reinsert the battery.
I just had this happen to me. I could only manually focus. For 20 minutes I did all the fixes you mentioned except changing lenses. Then I reset all custom changes in the camera back to factory settings and flipped all the switches on the lens to the right and then back to where they were (there are 4 switches on the lens) and I suddenly had auto focus back. I really don't know know what the problem was or exactly what fixed it. I think maybe one of the switches on the lens was moved accidentally and maybe was in "neutral" Cameras can be quirky. Hope you solve your issue.
This is a question that gets asked on a regular basis. In nearly every such thread I have followed, the problem is almost always the AF/M switch - either the one on the camera body or the one on the lens. You've tried multiple lenses so it's not that switch. The last time I read about this problem being solved, it was the switch on the camera body. It had gotten stuck between AF and M. If you've already toggled that switch back and forth I apologize and I know it's simplistic but make sure the switch on the body is firmly set to AF.
