I recently visited an auto museum and had the opportunity to photograph numerous classic cars. While these cars, taken as a whole, are absolute beauties, I find that their hood ornaments have a style that could have been created 2,000 years ago a master artist. Here is my first example. Unfortunately, I was moving through the museum so quickly I did not record the make or year of the automobile. If anyone knows, please share the info with me.

Nice shot. I think the animal is an Impala but I doubt that is what the car is. Hood ornaments are so cool! My favorite is the kneeling archer found on the Pierce Arrows.
Probably the last vehicle to sport a hood ornament was the Dodge pickup ram..?

How many people know how the hood ornament got started?
That one is beautiful piece of art.
I looked on line and this is what I found.
It was on a Chrysler 1930's imperial phaeton.

I would guess that they got started from the old radiator mounted thermometers.

Great sharp image. My Jaguar hood ornament does not look like yours. I don't have a clue on your ornament? Can you email the museum the picture and ask them?

Thanks for looking and the follow up. I would not have thought it was from Chrysler.

You could be right. I went back and checked other photos and I did have what looked like they could be thermometers but I wasn't certain.

Unfortunately, nice hood ornaments are attractive to thieves - years ago, I lost a Mercedes star and later on a Leaping Jaguar. Both were spring loaded and the Jag bonnet was damaged.

Those ornaments are beautiful. I don't remember ever having one on a vehicle, but we did have some sort of shiny un-artistic piece. I recall using it as a "handle" to raise the hood. I've thought what a nice thing it would be to have today, but promptly gave up on the idea. They wouldn't last very long in today's parking lots. I can't even keep fun tire valve covers on my truck!

I think the hood ornament is from a 1930's Chrysler Imperial Phaeton but I don't think the car is of that era.
