I've an amateur photographer for many years shooting family, vacations etc Just JPEG.
Now retired with lots of time, want to start post processing.
Just bought Adobe elements 2020, haven't opened it yet.

please suggest very simple software for basic post processing without monthly or yearly subscriptions. Will Adobe 2020 fit my needs?

Just need the basics, cropping, noise reduction, adjust histogram, color adjustments etc.

I will never be a pro or wedding photographer or have images in a museum, would be just great framed gifts for family and walls in our home.
D 500 and lots of good Nikon glass and Epson sure color P-600 printer.

Simplicity is key!! All suggestions appreciated!

I also use a D500. I'm not a great fan of doing a lot of post work.
I try to get it right in the camera.
I have just been using the Nikon software and PSE15.
It ssem to work for what I need.

Open it! For now that's all you will need. It will do everything an amateur could possibly need.

The elements sounds right for you. There is still a learning curve so don't try to guess your way through, watch the beginner videos and read the tutorials. You are a little limited in post processing with jpeg, but there is still a lot you can do.

I love Adobe Photoshop Elements! Please make sure to explore the "Guided" tab at the top of your screen...it will help you do difficult things, like replacing a background, with just a little effort on your part, while still having enough "power" to do layers, etc.

Elements is a great editor for your JPEGs. Watch the many free training videos on u-tube, the software as almost unlimited capability and you'll likely never learn it all. Start with the results of 'getting started elements 2020 video training' and take it from there.

Linda from Maine was helpful, ty.
Before trying @020, thought I'd put another question out there about other programs.
Years ago, I had heard that the Nikon software was difficult to use, Has it changed in the last 5 years?

You can edit any file format that Elements can open (not just raw) and it's exactly what you say you're looking for - simple yet powerful. You can take the rest of PSE at your own pace.

Open the PS Elements software, then click FILE at top left, then choose "Open in raw editor." You will be directed to your folders with photos, where you then choose which picture to edit.

Screenprint added by Linda. This is the work area for ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) in PS Elements. Note the few tools in upper left and on right side the "sliders." Out of view is another section with sharpening and noise reduction.

Photoshop Elements is a great choice, and it gets you into the Adobe universe. If for some reason you end up not liking it, download a trial version of Luminar 4.

Tom, if the Nikon software is free, there is no reason not to try, just as there is no reason not to try the PS Elements you already have in hand.

What I'm sensing is an avoidance of making a decision What one person says is easy another may say is difficult. Same with individual tasks: one struggles, another finds it all intuitive.

There is lots of help available for PS Elements: online and here. Jump in!

The OP said "please suggest very simple software for basic post processing.... Just need the basics, cropping, noise reduction, adjust histogram, color adjustments etc", and "Simplicity is key!!"

ACR in Elements will fulfil that need and then some. Plus if he does ever get his Lr6 up and running, ACR will be a perfect preparation for that. And Elements will also be a perfect preparation for Photoshop. And there's no extra complications like the catalog system to distract him.

All good points. I don't think I have ever cropped in ACR; forgot the tool was there

Thanks R.G.!

The OP wrote, "Simplicity is key!! All suggestions appreciated!" and that he has Photoshop Elements 2020. Adobe puts simplicity in the "Quick" mode just for that purpose. There is no need to side track top to "Expert" or "ACR".

Elements will do everything you need. Unless you are going to return it, open it and start getting familiar with it. Having said that, FastStone is free and will provide you with the basics.
