If your photos have a monetary value, you should be using a multiple drive setup with a RAID implementation. There are stand alone products for this, and of course, expensive. Tell me about technology changes, I am digitizing 100 vhs tapes. There is a great book on this, The DAM BOOK. (digital asset management) I watch this subject alot, and find that the use of non-rewritable disc's are most cost effective archival method for now. I know my flow will not work for everyone, but here it is:
Import with simultaneous copy to e-hdd. Edit. Replace original import with edited images, then upload to smuMug. At end of year I burn two dvd,s, one for me, and one for off site. Of course all Lightroom data is backed up also.
It is a real challenge balancing paranoia and budget when setting up a good flow :)

Flash Drives are not recommended archival media. There is a product out called M-disc. It has been tested by the Defense Department. It is essentially a DVD made of a stone like substance that will hold data for at least 1000 years. They have been immersed in liquid nitrogen and blasted with a blow torch without data loss. The burners are made by LG and the discs are manufactured by an outfit called Millenniata. The burners can be internal or external. LG makes them for Desktop PCs and Laptops, and they're no more expensive than regular burners. www.millenniata.com.

Judging by what's going on in the world there wont be anyone around to worry about it in 1,000 years. Or possibly 100 years.
