tom is right, Government in 1968 banned hood ornaments because to lessen the impact if hitting a person.

So I looked it up on the net and found I was wrong about that. I assumed this was done as part of other safety regulations such as plastic dashboards and airbags. I seem to recall them being highlighted in driver-ed videos from the 60's were people were literally found cut in half by them as they flew through windshields. Especially before seat belts were installed and worn by most people. In Europe they have outlawed them recently as part of a pedestrian safety law. This prompted German and English manufacturers like Mercedes and Jaguar to eliminate them altogether.
