She's ready for the Daytona 500

"Wingfoot Two" is one of Good Year's blimp fleet here to cover the Daytona 500 race today (Feb. 16,2020).

The Wingfoot Two is actually a semi-rigid airship, also known as a dirigible. From the outside, it may not differ much from Goodyear’s blimps of the past, but the newer edition is built with a structured frame. That feature allows the Wingfoot Two to maintain its shape whenever helium is drained from its interior.

She is seen here from US 1 at the New Smyrna Beach Airport. If the wind is right, she will fly over my house on the way to Daytona.

It can be lots of fun watching the crew move this airship from one site to another. We used to think our plane was slow (140kias forwards and back). Then we encountered one of these being re-located, and we flew rings around it! That made our entire week's trip worthwhile. Watching it at night is a trip when they run the light show on its big-screen, gets confused with UFOs. The aircrew is an entirely different breed of cat. Thanx for the memories.

Knots Indicated AirSpeed

A knot is one nautical mile per hour = 1.15 statute MPH

140 knots = 161 mph

It may not run out, but it is getting harder to capture and so more expensive.

Thanks, I've only heard references to knots, not including ias.
Can you tell I'm not a pilot?

Thanks for the comment Dave. I don't know if this one has the lights or not. Maybe on the other side.

They are fun to watch. I have seen them do some maneuvers that would bring a fixed wing to the ground.
