I had the pleasure of working with Kirk Douglas as well as with his old friend Burt Lancaster in 1986 on what was I think their final collaboration, a gangster comedy called "Tough Guys." I chronicled two aging gangsters who just couldn't make it by going straight. It also starred Eli Wallach and was a very funny film which, while well received critically, wasn't a big hit. And by the way, one of my favorites for both of those actors was "Seven Days in May," about a military takeover of the United States. I believe it was written by Rod Serling.

“Seven Days in May” was a great flick.

I recall him in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This was back in the early 1950s. Yes, to live to be 103 when considering that smoking was very much in and popular back in the 1930s and 40s. Not sure if Kirk was a smoker but the odds are he was. Nearly everyone in Hollywood was.

I do not think so. IIRC, he started as a circus performer and
did not drink or smoke. He was depicted on "Trumbo" (great movie)
by an actor who really impersonates him. It is worth watching.

In addition to all of his great work, I appreciate most his desire to free those who were blacklisted from the shackles of a demented, fearmongering Congressman and his cronies.

In the movie, Ulysses, the giant one eyed Cyclop wanted more wine. Kirk Douglas (Ulysses) and his men, stomped on grapes to make more wine. The Cyclop got drunk. Only to awaken and lose his only eye. Then, Ulysses had to reclaim his wife and title, from Suitors. The fighting in the end was classic. Anthony Quinn was one of the Suitors, who wanted to claim Ulysses's wife. I was a kid, when I saw that movie in a neighborhood theater. Where you could see two movies, and a cartoon, for 35 cents.

My late mom, said she paid 5 cents, in the late 1930s to see movies at her neighborhood theater. You got a bargain at 15 cents, some 20 years later.
