Actor Kirk Douglas passed away at age 103. I was surprised he lived so long, after suffering a major Stroke many years ago. I remember seeing some of his movies when I was a kid. Three were Ulysses, Spartacus, and the Vikings. He played Artist Van Gogh, and countless other great movies, many in B&W after WW2. RIP Kirk.

He was prolific in various roles; but, for me, the western roles were the best.
Films like “Gunfight at the OK Corral”, “The Last Sunset”.

I found the performance of Kirk Douglas in "Paths of Glory" one of his best. It illustrated his range of talent.

I never saw that movie in a theater, but on TV. I remember it took place during the WW1. An Officer who stood up against the higher military command, that wanted the executions of soldiers in his Unit. Great movie. I read some time later, the French Military, had protested the release of that movie.

I'll have to seek out that movie. It has been mentioned more than once.

I recall him in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This was back in the early 1950s. Yes, to live to be 103 when considering that smoking was very much in and popular back in the 1930s and 40s. Not sure if Kirk was a smoker but the odds are he was. Nearly everyone in Hollywood was.

Cripes, his kid is old!
Someone recently said he didn’t want to live to be 103. I told him to tell me that when he hits 102. Me, I would like to live forever.

A star in every sense of the word. So many great roles. One scene that sticks in my mind is in the vikings where he jumps from oar to oar along the outside of the boat, and obviously being shot before CGI it really was him. Thanks for so many great films rest in peace.

“The List of Adrian Messenger”, a very good film in which he played several MAJOR parts, along with Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Frank Sinatra and Robert Mitchum.
R.I.P Kirk Douglas

I had the pleasure of working with Kirk Douglas as well as with his old friend Burt Lancaster in 1986 on what was I think their final collaboration, a gangster comedy called "Tough Guys." I chronicled two aging gangsters who just couldn't make it by going straight. It also starred Eli Wallach and was a very funny film which, while well received critically, wasn't a big hit. And by the way, one of my favorites for both of those actors was "Seven Days in May," about a military takeover of the United States. I believe it was written by Rod Serling.

"The War Wagon" with John Wayne. Maybe not the best western, but a good one to watch Douglas in.
