I hope Nikon doesn't follow Canon's path by canceling any new F-mount lens design or R&D. Maybe they won't, hoping that people will switch to Nikon because there will still be DSLR lenses available for their Full Frame cameras.

Sony is now making Nikon's high-end sensors. They've embedded a clever bug into the Nikon cameras with these Sony sensors: the Nikon DSLR suddenly dies after a encrypted number of flips of the mirror the sensor can detect as different from the original Sony mirrorless cameras. Just look online for 'Nikon Sudden Death Syndrome'. I've seen a thread where they think from your Nikon serial number you can identify the week number in the calendar year (01 -> 53) your camera is most likely to die. The syndrome isn't even very hush-hush.

I thought the EF lenses adapted to the RF were supposed to be sharper than using them on a DSLR???

My 85 f/1.8 acts like a new lens on my R but my draw to this system is weight. I really, really want the RF 70-200 as my EF 70-200 just seems heavy and big on my R. At $2699 it’s hard to swallow but I’m hoping to maybe get $1200 out of my EF 70-200 to help offset the cost.

The reviews I am seeing so far of the 1Dx3 seem to be very positive of its capabilities... It seems some professionals prefer the mirrored optical viewfinder vs the electronic viewfinder...

I understand that. and I didn't suggest that the 1DX MK III should have been a mirrored camera. I think this would have been a perfect opportunity for Canon to introduce the 1DX MK III as a mirrorless design. Looks to me that Canon has taken a severe step to the rear.

The 'thinking' is the mirrorless platform can focus the EF lens more accurately, but the RF lenses are sharper, particularly at the ultrawide f/1.2 apertures.

Aren’t most products most costly when they are the new technology. As the market grows and matures the cost and price usually come down and the capabilities improve.
Remember how much the first elk phones, VCRs, computers, CD players, TVs and color and flat screen TVs cost when new. I recently bought a 50” TV for a about $250...impossible just a few years ago

I hope the RF lenses drop some. I can’t see why they are almost double the cost.

How many FD lenses came out after the EF debuted? Just curious.

Whatever was in the pipeline, if anything...

By the way, FL lenses can also be used on FD-mount cameras. Due to the shorter flange to sensor distance, Canon FD and FL lenses can be adapted to the new RF mount. Several manufacturers make the adapters now. The lens is fully manual, but hey, at least you can use the glass!

I sold all my FD bodies and have bought a few more FD lenses to use only on my Sony mirrorless. Someday, I'll consolidate everything onto the EOS R platform, with just a small number of EF lenses kept for film work with an EOS 1v. Canon needs to see the light on IBIS to make the FDs more useful on mirrorless.

I’m not a Nikon shooter but I believe their 70-200 f/2.8 is in the $2700 price range and has been. Canon may only seem expensive compared to its own line and not a Nikon lens for example.

I’m sure your right on price but what gets me is the latest EF 70-200 which isn’t that old and has internal zoom is $1799 and the RD is $2699 and doesn’t even zoom internally. By the time that I can buy I’m hoping to find a good used one for around 2k. We shall see.

Yep! Even cameras drop in price as the market life ages. A new Lumix GH5 was $2000 ($2135 in 2020 dollars) at introduction three years ago. It's still selling, but at $1400 ($1312 in 2017 dollars). Its predecessor, the Lumix GH4, was $1700 ($1864 in 2020 dollars) at introduction, six years ago in May. It's still selling, but at $600 ($547 in 2014 dollars).

Early adopters pay for research, development, tooling, and advertising costs. At some point, demand falls off, and total revenue falls below total production costs, at which point the product is abandoned.

Canon announced that it is concentrating on RF lenses, not that they are abandoning EF lenses. Canon has a huge and comprehensive selection of excellent EF lenses. Probably the most complete in the industry. They will still be built and fully supported by Canon. It was also stated that if there is market demand then new designs will be introduced. The Canon EF mount is not being abandoned and no Canon DSLR user is going to have to worry about being able to buy pretty much whatever lens they want. Same as now.
When all the fuss over this announcement dies down the only difference any of us will notice will be no announcements of new EF lenses, at least for the time being.

Good plan. Yeah, IBIS is great stuff! If you've used a recent Olympus or Panasonic, you want it in whatever else you use.
