What are your thoughts regarding Canon's announcement that there will be no new Canon EF lens designs? It is their intent to put all of their design energy into the RF mount. As I understand it, they will continue manufacturing EF lenses but there will be no new designs. I'm not sure if this announcement extends to the EF-S mount and the EF-M mount. Your thoughts?

I am sure it includes EF-lenses, which are aimed at the same ecosystem. After thirty years, surely a user can find the EF lense needed.

I’ve heard that before.

I know that it includes the EF series of lenses. After all that’s what the original notification stated. I am wondering about the EF-S and the EF-M series of lenses.

Here's an article on the topic:

I've read that article and it does not address the EF-S and EF-M mount.

"As it stands today, while the EF mount for DSLRs is still supported, there won't be any new EF lenses unless they are demanded by the marketplace."

Read the last half of the sentence.........Canon didn't shut the door completely.

I meant EF-S, but made a typo. Article seems to imply Canon won't develop anything other than EOS-R right now, but seems to leave door open to see what develops. Are there any EF lenses needed right now? Considering clientele of EF-S and EF-M lenses, they may be happy with what they have plus using adapter+EF

Seems rather strange considering the millions of EOS mount cameras out there using EF and EF-s lenses - plus they are putting out new models.
If true then Tamron, Sigma etc will have a great chance to "eat Canon's lunch" with new designs and improved lenses for EF/EF-s cameras. With only 8 lenses they already have the door open for others with M mount cameras.

I for one will be a bit miffed if they leave me stranded having to consider no new or improved lenses vs having to dump my multiple (4) EF/EF-s bodies and buy new RF bodies and a pile of new lenses if I don't like the adapter results on an RF body.

On the Canon USA website there are 58 EF lenses, 2 EF extenders, and 16 EF-s lenses listed as being current production. I would say that there is a pretty good chance that photographers will be able to find the lens they want for quite some time to come. BTW, yes, Canon is putting a lot of effort into RF lenses. It is a new system, one that they obviously have quite a future planned for, so naturally Canon is going to build up the lens selection as quick as possible.

I find it strange that Canon would announce the 1DX MK III which uses the EF mount and then turn around and announce that they will stop all new EF lens design. Perhaps the 1DX MK III should have been designed around the RF mount.

You don't need to worry about EF performance on an R series body. They lose absolutely no performance. If anything they perform better because of the more consistent auto-focus of the R bodies and the RF lenses are better yet. With all the lenses Canon has available, and the quality of most of those lenses I doubt that anyone is going to be left stranded.
