IPhone X sm over Nikon 7200 on a cruise

I admit I haven't tried, but I can't imagine my D7200, shooting RAW, with a zoom lens, say 18-140, can't produce images of higher quality when viewed on a 24" plus monitor! And the control over DoF and shutter speed attained by shooting manual with floating ISO can now be matched by an iPhone?? Admittedly I only have a 7 so I'm happy to be corrected.

I am getting ready for a Caribbean cruise next week but I will leave my Nikon 7200 at home. I have taken photos with it for over ten years but on my last two cruises, I shot with the Nikon and with my IPhone X sm, almost shot for shot.

I found that the photos were indistinguishable . I never print out my photos and only view them in Photos. I do edit them however.

It might be for convenience as I age. I am 73 but I think it is the fact the difference , if any, is not worth the hassle. I wonder if other UHHs have come to this decision when going on a cruise or taking an extended trip.

#1: I am NOT spending 1K, 2K 3K+ on a camera, to have it gathering dust in some closet, while I go galavanting around the world.

#2: I am NOT spending 1K, 1.2K on a cellphone, period, end of story!!!

There are enough megapixels in both my camera and cellphone to take useful pictures. My preference is the Olympus because it is specifically designed for photography. The Galaxy is a good camera with a pro mode, but there are limitations as to how convenient it is as just a camera.

My opinion is that I would still take both along. Should whatever need arise, then you get a choice of which tool will do the best for the situation.

If you always shoot in good light then by all means, keep using your i phone. But in low and tricky light, you might wish you had the D7200.

Well, I want to voice my opinion. I am 71 and would never leave home without 2 full frame cameras when traveling. Last April my wife and I were on a 18 days Panama Canal cruise. We visited Columbia, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico. I had with me Nikon Z6 with 24-70mm f4 and Nikon D750 with 16-35 f4 and 70-300 VR. I also had a Godox flash that I used only on ship. I would want to see OP taking pictures of the Canal crossing with iPhone. The front of the top observation deck of the ship was all glassed so people with phones were forced taking shots through the dirty and scratched glass. I had to hold my D750 with 16-35 in my hand above the glass to have the unobstructed view. I shot in Live View mode and used the flip screen to see what I was shooting. I got a lot of great shots. Later in Costa Rica I went on guided tour into the jungle to photograph birds. My Nikkor 70-300 was very helpful, also often too short. I wished I had 200-500. Again, a phone camera would have been useless there. In 2018 we spent a month in Europe driving through 12 countries and visited a lot of beautiful sites to photograph. I had with me FF Pentax K-1 with 28-105 mm and 20-35 mm that covered all situations when shooting in the streets, museums and cathedrals. Brought home well over 3000 RAW images. I saw plenty of people around us using camera phones and even iPads. It's certainly more convenient and sufficient for snapshots for posting on Instagram, but I wanted a different type of images. I strive for perfection and would rather carry a bag with a good camera or two and several lenses to get the best result.

I am 76, and still carry a Nikon D750, plus a bevy of lenses, a flash, etc. My iPhone gets good images of nearby subjects....toddlers at family gatherings, etc, when my camera bag is elsewhere, but does not get worthwhile images of distant subjects...closeups of eagles nesting atop distant trees, etc. Every tool has it’s applications. What is great for one use is not so great for other uses. There are things I would use a cell phone camera for, and things I would not. What suits your style of photography is what is best for you. Do as you please. For travel I take a bag full of full frame gear, so I can get a wider variety of mage types.

My XS Max is now my go to camera after years with Nikon and Olympus plus Broncos and Mamiya.

The XS Max at 12 MP replaced a 5S at 10MP. I have an 18x44 canvas print in our LR. The XS Max with dual lenses is supported by more than 75 apps including RAW capabilities. I have printed many images which have scored well in competitions.

So why did I leave the DSLRs? At 73 I could no longer use the DSLRs due to arthritis and other medical issues. No regrets at all.
For a cruise I would only have a smart phone. For birding and safaris,I would take a tripod and a full frame/lenses.

Whatever you feel comfortable with. I would never take such a trip and leave my cameras behind. Why have them?

I second that!
