IPhone X sm over Nikon 7200 on a cruise

I am getting ready for a Caribbean cruise next week but I will leave my Nikon 7200 at home. I have taken photos with it for over ten years but on my last two cruises, I shot with the Nikon and with my IPhone X sm, almost shot for shot.

I found that the photos were indistinguishable . I never print out my photos and only view them in Photos. I do edit them however.

It might be for convenience as I age. I am 73 but I think it is the fact the difference , if any, is not worth the hassle. I wonder if other UHHs have come to this decision when going on a cruise or taking an extended trip.

When I'm going on a trip or big event, I take the camera. However, for family gatherings or celebrations I simply use the iPhone. Those are photos to capture memories only and the phone camera is fine for that.

There was a time when I felt awkward - non-photographic - using my phone to take pictures. Now, I feel awkward using a DSLR to take pictures where a dozen other people are using their phones. I'm the "odd one out." I feel like people are staring at me and wondering why I'm holding that big thing to my face.

I’m also 73, as of today actually, but I still take my Canon 5DIV with me wherever I go, just in case. I do leave most of the lenses home though since I am no longer willing to lug the weight around.

I am going on a Carribean cruise in a month and will likely take my Nikon Z6 with adapter and a 28-300 zoom. I will also take my Sony RX100VII and my IPhone 8 Plus. There will likely be a photo seminar on the cruise and an opportunity to visit a reserve with monkeys and macaws. I like to take photos and have framed some and also enter photo contests. I am 71 plus.

Well, the D7200 has been out for only about 5 years, but my boss found out the same.
Most of the photos he shot on his last trip were with his iPhone 10. He rarely used his D810.
He was wanting something compact and thought about a Sony, but for the same price, he chose to upgrade his phone instead. Some smartphones do an amazing job.
Enjoy!

Whatever you feel comfortable with. I would never take such a trip and leave my cameras behind. Why have them?

If you don't print them, then why bother with a DSLR?

I have a Sony A6300 and the Sony 18-135 lens and that covers pretty much my needs, however I got the Sony RX100VII just before we took a cruise in October, and I really appreciated that camera. I took a few shots with my iPhone 8 Plus, but for the most part I used the RX. It gave me the ability to use the optical zoom without sacrificing image quality that occurs when zooming with the iPhone. And the RX100VII was light and compact, plus I never felt intrusive like I would have with a DSLR, and I didn’t have to lug different lenses.

Good catch. I meant the Nikon 7100 , out since 2013 but not ten years already. Oh the problems of memory and getting older :)

If all you are going to do is snapshots, the iPhone is more than adequate.

I have a little Nikon P520 I take along if I'm concerned about space etc. It seems hardly less convenient than a cell phone , takes good pictures despite the operator, and nice telephoto capabilities.

I too am going on a Caribbean cruise next week and will bring only my iPhone and a Sony RX100vi.
I'm used to carrying a full backpack of Olys for workshops; this is NOT a workshop. The Sony is a super compromise.
I'm going on 85. Time to relax.
Btw, what ship? PM @ daldds@aol.com if you want.
Thanks
David

I would feel strange not having a DSLR at my side. But, that is only because I am still somewhat in denial.
I am evolving.

That’s why I converted to micro 4/3s. I got to have my camera and take it with me, hassle free.
