Why do they call it Cloud storage?

This 'cloud storage' was coined by NOVELL a nearly extinct network corporation to create a sense of remote storage free of potential physical disasters that did not involve personal effort from their clients: Store it on our server and we take care of the rest. This included not only the data but also network 'permissions' among others. It was introduced with great fanfare with version 5.0 if I recall correctly. It was an early approach to VPN.

NOVELL issue: The company was supporting IPX and Microsoft as well others IP. Guess who won out.
NOVELL hall of shame: They killed DR DOS, the first OS that allowed direct networking as well as 'parallel processing'*

* Really 'time sharing' between applications. GEOWorks was an example of that, an early graphical interface that worked better than windows at the time, way better.

Has anyone had issues with the quality of images pulled back from Amazon to own computer?
Raw and JPEG?
Time to download OK?

Okay, if you know about this, I'm sorry, I don't mean to be redundant, BUT...………

Did you know that if you're an Amazon Prime Member, Amazon provides UNLIMITED Cloud Full Res Photo Storage. I Just dumped over 2,000 NEF files to their cloud. You have limitations on Videos (and probably regular Data Files) But unlimited Photos. I Cant believe it. I Wish I knew about this before the California Wildfires that destroyed my NAS system and every photo I ever took in my life.

Anyhow, I've been a prime member for nearly a year now and never knew of this. Check it out if you're a Prime member.

I've been using MS OneDrive for storage for yrs. As I have the Office 365 subscription I also have a TB+ of storage. ALL my data, is stored there, much encrypted, even my Lightroom backup is there. Makes up grading to a new computer very easy, plus everything is available everywhere.

The images are exactly the same that you uploaded. I only do JPEG, so can’t answer about Raw. As to the other poster, this feature of Prime is not free, it is included. We are paying for it whether you use it or not.

If you think that it is safe from prying eyes you must believe that the FBI is honorable and the government working hand in hand with corporations like Amazon are trustworthy.

Wait...…. You're implying our government AND the FBI aren't honorable and above board in their daily activities (Shudders in Horror) Say it isn't so !

I can't even imagine your pain with this loss. One word: carbonite.com (automatic off-site backup/restore)

Thanks AZNikon, I cant believe it myself sometimes. I had multiple copies of my data cross copied to different computers, and also to a RAID array. Unfortunately none of it was offsite. Hey, it took me 66 years to finally get it. I Must be getting smarter in my old age eh?

KiwiRuss,

I Doubt quality will be an issue. To the best of my knowledge they are not compressing images for display. I did a little playing around once I dumped quite a lot of raw files there. I wanted to see just how you could retrieve 1 or many files if I needed to. It worked pretty slick honestly. Was it perfect? Heck no, but it was very usable. Upload and download speed is obviously dependent on your ISP and the service you have. If you have really slow internet, I would expect ANY backup to be a painfully long process.

Back before cloud storage, when it was just a concept, the diagrams used cloud shapes to depict the different storage options. Hence the term cloud storage.

From what i can find Carbonite only allows 23 GB for the $6.00 a month charge, is that correct?

Did you CAREFULLY READ there terms of service. As I understand it, it is not the most favorable.

.................Now I keep a backup of everything on an external drive that runs every hour plus a backup of my images on a separate drive kept in a fireproof/waterproof box that runs monthly.

That's similar to what got me into trouble, "fireproof safe" means different things to different people. The temperature and duration of the wildfires FAR exceeded any ratings placed on "fireproof" safes. Even our local bank vault lost some items in their vault. My measly little home safe was a melted distorted mess. Offsite (and MILES away from my locale would have been the only hope)

Understood, probably should have said fire resistant...even if fireproof, the backup drive would probably be melted solid!

FWIW, I also keep finished images on Flicker, even though all reduced JPG images.

A good and cost effective concept is to buy a large enough external, back up weekly or monthly to it and simply let a friend keep it at their house close by, even better is reciprocate and keep a friends backup drive at your place.

I have thought that two people using a personal cloud disk could allow off site backup between two houses. Each person has a personal cloud device with access shared between them. Any restores could be done by collecting the drive and relocating to make it a local drive.

Might be worth exploring.
