I flew hang gliders at Oceanside near Tillamook for years. Lovely little town. There was a deli and a little bar but I haven't been there in almost 20 years. Lovely rocks to photograph and when the tide is low you can hunt for opals in the beach sand. Afterward, cheese and wine in Tillamook and a visit to the old blimp hangar.
Have a great trip!

Greetings and Happy New Year!
I'm a true novice at photography but love to shoot. We took a trip down the west coast of Oregon this past August/September. Spectacular! What views. Fortunately, weather was great. Loved Bandon, Yachets, and many other stops. Motels along the way. You'll love the trip.

Hello, looking for some help on where to go on the Oregon Coast for photography of course. Just wondering where you might suggest for a motorhome trip. Town names would be great along with what you would go photograph while there. Anyone who has done a west coast from California up to Washington, what is on your don't miss list. I'm trying to put together camp sites and how long to stay at each place.
Thanks I have just never been out west and not sure where to start!
Beth

I hope you are trailering a car. I would think driving a motor home here and there every day would be a pain.

Having grown up and getting married and adding kids in Bandon, OR I will first admit some prejudice. That being said the beach and bluffs around town are spectacular and very popular with photogs. Pay attention to the tide table and watch the wave action. Every year there’s a tourist or three that gets in trouble and or drowns. I am not kidding. North of there make sure you go to Shore Acres state park near Charleston. Heading north find Cape Perpetua headlands and lighthouse. The reef scene at Shore Acres is violent and enthralling at high tide. Pay attention to the warning signs about. They are not kidding. The Florence harbor is worth a visit. Work your way north to Canon Beach, another area with great sea stacks. Really almost all of the Oregon coast is a photog’s dream. Bring rain gear and windproof clothing regardless of time of year. It’s fickle.

For samples of what you’ll see search Susan Dimock Photography. She’s a pro that lives in Bandon and is highly talented. She a friend of mine. Her work will leave an impression.

Can’t advise as to California beaches. Never spent much time there. Have a great trip.

... I approve of this message! Really! I Do!! I am also tainted as to the Bandon area - but grew up around the Newport central coast.
~ Lighthouses in various locations, beaches galore. Really, Gold Beach to Astoria - you will never run out of beautiful scenery, D.Lish restaurants to go to and just nice people that run small shops everywhere!! You will fall in love all over again!! ...Whooohooo!!

I suggest that you obtain a book "Photographing Oregon" by Greg Vaughn. Greg is a landscape and wildlife photography who leads photo tours in Oregon, Yellowstone and other places. I met him as a guide on a Muench workshop in Yellowstone. He also leads his own tours. He is a very good photographer and a terrific guide. You can find the book listed on his web site, https://gregvaughn.photoshelter.com. I think it is also on Amazon. Plan on rain and have fun.

I did a drive from Seattle to San Fran 10 years ago in my little Chinook motor home. I saw Crater Lake, Mt Hood, most of the coast line and the Redwoods. You can't go wrong anywhere. Just drive and keep a local map. Of course Google every day for things close to you. You will just be overwhelmed at the end of the trip.

My strategy was to get up before sunrise, shoot. Drive in mid day, find a location and shoot at sunset. Sleep and repeat.

Worked for me for 2 months of which the Coast was about 10 days. I would repeat it in a heartbeat if I was single, had a motor home, and the energy to do it. None of which are now true, but I have 25,000 pictures anytime I want to remember that "greatest vacation of all time".

the sites mentioned are excellent. seaside is a fun town just 10 min. north of canon beach. CB could b very busy as haystack rock attracts lots of visitors. newport is a good hub, w/good aquarium. we took it in when the weather was foul.

bandon is my favorite. small town; great sea stacks. i'll attach a bandon photo.

101 hugs the coast along the Central and Southern stretches, great scenic opportunities. And Oregon has very good state parks with shower facilities. Port Orford, Bandon, Newport, and Lincoln City are all good locales. And on the far north end is Astoria with all of its historical ties to Fort Stevens and Lewis & Clark's visit.

One thing about Pacific Northwest weather.if you don't like it, wait five minutes and it can change. These conditions can happen in five minutes or take five days to change depending on time of year. September and October offer the safest opportunity. You don't mention your starting point, but if you can afford the time, start in the Redwoods in Northern California near Crescent City and work your way up the Oregon Coast to Washington State. Highway access to the Coast is better in Oregon than Washington, but it is an adventure that shouldn't be missed, Whatever time you are allowing, triple it,

I say this as a professional photographer with about 1000 assignments for Sunset Magazine in the Pacific Northwest over a 30 year period and resident of the Seattle area since 1964.

Come and enjoy, That should be, in my opinion the biggest reward.

I ditto the info above however start a little further south in Petaluma, Ca, from there pop over to fort bragg, up coast and inland you'll come out in leggett, ca right in the middle of the coastal redwoods, run the avenue of the giants and north ward to oregon.

Manzanita Beach in Oregon is a beautiful 7 mile stretch of beach. You can set up camp at Nehalem State Park and you are right next door to Manzanita. Canon Beach is pretty too but has so many people on the beach compared to Manzanita. If you drive the entire 101 research the lighthouses along the way. The state parks in Oregon seem to be really nice. Crater Lake is a must see for inland sites. Drive around the lake and stop at the hiking trails for the views.

It's best to drive down US 101 from north to south. Almost of the the the scenic pull outs are on the ocean side. You won't has to cross traffic to pull off and it will be easier to merge back on the the 101.

You are getting some good recommendations. Also check out the Three Capes Scenic Loop near Tillamook.

You can't go wrong to spend a day at Silver Falls State Park near Salem, with ten waterfalls.

Portland provides some great photo opportunities and you will also find a lot of fantastic locations in the Columbia River Gorge and near Mount Hood.

As relatively recent inhabitants of Josephine County in Southern Oregon, we moved here in 2012, this thread is very informative and interesting. And the photographs are great. Keep them coming!

That is sound advice. Here’s a shot of the stairs to Elephant Rock at Coquille Point in Bandon. When I was a kid the stairway didn’t exist.
