Someone asked this end-of-year question last year. I guess I get to ask for 2019. Filtering by 2019 as the shooting date, I get "20 lenses" in my LR catalog spread over 1587 images and three cameras, but that count is skewed by the use of extenders. The EF 300 f/2.8L IS II comes in as my #1 when the two extended configurations are merged along with the lens alone, totaling 408. That's 'keepers' in the catalog. The usage number is probably 3x to 4x that number in bursts at airshows.

I was surprised to see the EF 16-35 f/4L IS was the second most used in file count at 256.

I looked at the filters several times as just 1587 images for the calendar year seems surprisingly low. I know I shot less, but that's less than half the 2018 count for the same LR filters that returns 3675.

If you filter and count your images, what surprises did you find? Do you use your own usage data to plan to sell unused lenses / cameras? Or maybe, to change the lenses you'll use more in 2020?

Orrrr... just let Lightroom Dashboard get stats from your catalog. I knew it was my 16-300 - thats a handy lens to have on most of the time for me.

Staring off into space rather than
researching my exif data, I'd say
it was the 12-60 and/or 14-140
m4/3 kit lenses.

I have two of each, plus a great
variety of bodies to use them on.
So on shear "opportunity power",
day or night, the m4/3 kit lenses
go places :-)

-----------------------------------

I did say "day or night" but when
browsing for examples to post, it
seems like I avoid photographing
by daylight ! Serves the purpose
though. Lenses of better-than-kit
level would not get to "strut their
stuff" in my working conditions:

Great link! I'll need to give them a smaller LRCAT, but they have a 'converter' tool for this dashboard analysis.

Most used in my kit for 2019 was the 24X105 f/4 L II IS USM. Next most used was the 28-300 f/3.6-5.6 L IS USM. My 100-400 L got used somewhat, but not as much as the 28-300 which I acquired this summer. Using them with a 5dIV gets me some very nice captures.

Nikon 18-300 f5.6 (6908) Nikon 80-200 f2.8 (682) This does not include the shots that have been dumped out of LR which is probably about equal numbers for both lenses. I am a ruthless deleter.

Almost exclusively I use the Sigma 18-300 on my 80D. But I do use 2 other cameras, the SX50 HS and Lumix DMC-ZS100 with their fixed zoom lenses.

Paul I really don't analyze by clicks... only by times I meet or exceed client expectations...

That said, just like you my AF 300mm f/2.8 pulled way ahead of all my other glass...
This is primarily a result of session time... I shoot league soccer and fill up 64gb cards pretty quick!

Have an epic New Year and much future success!

For 2019 it's the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI.

For you guys that don't have Lightroom, there is a program called "Exposure Plot" which might give you a clue. You give it a folder and it will look through all the image files in that folder (you can include subfolders) and give you a histogram of focal lengths. Also ISO, Shutter speed, and something else (aperture?)

https://www.vandel.nl/

Looking at an old folder I found that I have peaks at 24mm, 70mm, 200mm, and 500mm. Corresponding to the use of my 24-70, 70-200, and 200-500. It just doesn't give you the specific lenses. Only the distribution of focal lengths.

It might be a useful program if GAS makes you feel like you need a new lens. You can evaluate whether you want to look for a long lens or a short one.

I'm not at my desktop where my primary LR catalog is located. When I get there I can look at the metadata filter and get some idea of which lens gets most use.

First Nikon DX18-70, by far, but that includes a lot of documentary work shots. Second Sigma 20-20mm. Tied for third, Nikon 50 / 1.8 and Nikon 70-300.

That reflects my own personal style more than anything else.

Great question... made me look.

In my case, using my Full Spectrum-converted Sony a6000 mirrorless APS-C camera the most, my most frequently employed lens was the Sony 18-135 mm.
