I kinda miss those days - it was a MUCH simpler times.
We built several over the years.
We lived next to I65 in Louisville. When they built it, we would take our carts to the top of the new ramp and race down; the bulldozer operators would even smooth our path.
As to brakes? That's what your sneakers did! Mom wondered why they'd only last a few days.
I remember Merthiolate being much more stinging than Mercurochrome. However, iodine was the worst. I really believe parents used these as punishment!

I never got into that phase (a good one). At 14, I was busy studying for my amateur radio license and working on things electronic. Since I lived 5 miles away from high school, I had my own wheels - a bicycle which got me back and forth from home to school.
I agree those were the days - innocence days.

I found out much later in life that my parents were a lot smarter and well informed than I thought they were
The only cure for Road Rash is Iodine, Gauze and time. What a wonderful time, Scars you were proud of.
