Yes, that is an improved price tag - from Sony's point of view. : )

I have looked at every compare site and can’t for the life of me figure out what Sony improved on the new a9. Thoughts? First hand experience?

I own the Sony a9 and use the new 200-600 mm zoom lens. I have found that the a9 does everything I need when it comes to photographing birds in flight.
However, there are about 9 changes I did to menu items to get the a9 to track accurately.
Below is a test shot using this combo. Not bad. But, I am still experimenting.
I got the a9 with the vertical grip off ebay with about 1200 shutter count for $2200.00. For now I see no reason to spend that kind of money for the a9II because again, the a9 for what I use it for does it all.
But again, I am a Nikon guy and I am not sold yet on the Sony system. There are many things still I like about my Nikon's that Sony does not have, yet.

Let's not suffer from GAS! If we want great. All the power to those with deep pockets. Obviously when weighing out the benefits of new models we have to ask, "do I need that?". It's. Some love new gadgets. Other an make due with a Nikon D70. Some of my best shots are still from that, my first DSLR.

Well, as I always say, buyer beware. I was skeptical to upgrade for a Sony a7 to the A7II. When I found out they were adding IBIS, I was sold. IBIS is a game changer since I use a lot of legacy glass. One must see what features are added, possible eliminated and make an informed decision. If they are adding a new mode, for no apparent reason, stick to what you have and make a change when they make the upgrade more reasonable and they are adding something that you just can't live without. Sony seems to upgrade with careful thought and does not seem to make senseless upgrades.

I love my Sony bodies with IBIS!! That along with Focus Peaking makes so many old lenses I have seem like new, at least a lot more fun anyway! Not a day goes by that I'm not looking for another interesting old lens to add to my collection....some I would have probably never given a second thought ! Throw in the various mount adapters and almost anyone's lens is fair game... Been thinking about that A7II myself...

Bingo, my brother! Exactly! Having IBIS is a game changer and turning any of my old film Era lenses into a stabilized lens, well, that's the best! I do the same thing. Sometimes you can find some real gems at garage and estate sales. EBay is boundless too!

Yep, Yep and Yep!! I've built a large system of Sony A-mount for what I call "chump change" (Between my Sony/Minolta collection and my Nikon System - Momma says I have way to many cameras and lenses - how can that be....too much is never enough!!!) The other thing that is so nice about the older lenses is less electronics inside, so much easier to clean/repair, so much less to go wrong.

Just picked up a Sigma 135-400 (off Ebay) the other day, advertised as "zoom stuck/broken", offered less than 40% of starting bid price, $50, seller thought about it for a day, now have it for $60 delivered, it came from an Estate buy.... from the look of the mount and the electrical contacts, and internal/external apearance it looks like it was never mounted/used. I spent about ten minutes using major arm strength to pull on the front barrel and bust the stiction, and a little soft wood pry-bar ...viola!! New lens to play with, works like a champ, AF is fine, another feature I love - screw drive AF, it ain't the fastest, but just never seems to fail, unlike those little super-duper-hyper internal motors, IBIS is super, and takes very sharp shots handheld, works well with Clear Image Zoom, and bonus, still looks brand new (I'm a happy camper) you just have to roll the dice sometimes!!.....it's like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates...you just never know what you might get!!! Enjoy!!!

I had a Sigma 70-300mm OS that worked perfectly with the laea4 adapter but I sold it. I'm kicking myself for that one. It was a great lens optically, better than the macro version but since I had IBIS I figured I didn't need it. Now you can't find them. Anything you recommend on the Tele or tele zoom?

You must have been looking at the wrong sites. Check YouTube for hands on preview by professional sports photographers. Briefly: better AF performance, better low light performance, better ergonomics, 2 x UHSII SD card slots, far better connectivity. Nearly forgot to mention the 10fps mechanical shutter speed instead of the 5fps on the A9.

Better AF and better low light is a bonus. After I posted this, I did watch a few reviews on YouTube. I really like the ergonomic changes and having both card UHS II makes more sense. I actually like the ability to add a voice memo to a picture, especially for travel pics.

I also watched a video comparing the a9II with the a7RIV. Since I do mostly portraits and landscapes, with some active grand children thrown in, I may be better off with the a7RIV.

I will continue my research. Thanks for your input

It does not seem to be any better, looks like a few tweaks that other would call version 2.14 downloads for an existing model.
Remember Sony is an appliance/TV manufacturer, they cycle through models nearly annually. They have put out 4 a7s while Canon has put out 2 5DIV and the same for Nikon only 2 models in the same period.

Lol. Actually, the FRONT of the a9II is still labeled a9. The a9II is on top, like an afterthought.

Remember that Sony bought into the photographic industry, by purchasing Minolta, an extremely creative and innovative manufacturer, producing products, ahead of their time, in some cases. Also remember that Nikon are partly owned by an automotive/electronics company, namely Mitsubishi.

Great capture. It I had the a9, I wouldn't be interested in the a9II either. I was a Nikon gal and still have some Nikon stuff that I kept. Even though the ergonomics on the Sony a7III wasn't as good as the Nikon D500, there were more things that I liked better on the Sony than the Nikon to push me towards the switch...plus, it's confusing for this aging mind to go back and forth between systems!! I kept my Sigma 135/1.8 with the Nikon mount and bought an adapter to use it on my Sony. Going forward with the Sony system, either the a9II or the a7RIV has the better ergonomics and a few other features that would be a step up. I may purchase a longer lens, like the 100-400 and 1.4 teleconverter before I upgrade my camera. I think I need some GAS-X!!!!

Before I switched systems, I considered the D850. What does your Nikon system have that the Sony system does not?
