I have looked at every compare site and can’t for the life of me figure out what Sony improved on the new a9. Thoughts? First hand experience?

Aside from the ergonomics many of the improved features won't benefit the amateur photographer. The A9 with the latest firmware is a better value.
The a9II has a USB-C port, anti flicker mode, and can now have both SD card slots to accommodate the UHS-II memory card version. Instead of just one card. The a9 does not have those three features.
Probably an improve price tag.

There is a $1000 difference in Price!!!

I did notice that both slots accommodate the UHS-II memory card but I didn't know about the USB-C port. I'm surprised that the a9 doesn't have an anti-flicker mode because my a7III does have that. The a9II also has more aspect ratios (which I probably wouldn't use). I also see more contrast detection auto-focus points, 25 vs 425. Why such a difference, I wonder?

I guess one would have to hold each camera to see if the better ergonomics are worth $1000!!

I read that there are a lot of issues with the EVF when anti-flicker is turned on, especially with the a7iii and a7Riii. This may have been fixed with a firmware update.

You must have been looking at the wrong sites. Check YouTube for hands on preview by professional sports photographers. Briefly: better AF performance, better low light performance, better ergonomics, 2 x UHSII SD card slots, far better connectivity. Nearly forgot to mention the 10fps mechanical shutter speed instead of the 5fps on the A9.

They put a II on it and hope to sucker the people to buy the same camera.
It does not seem to be any better, looks like a few tweaks that other would call version 2.14 downloads for an existing model.
Remember Sony is an appliance/TV manufacturer, they cycle through models nearly annually. They have put out 4 a7s while Canon has put out 2 5DIV and the same for Nikon only 2 models in the same period.
Well, as I always say, buyer beware. I was skeptical to upgrade for a Sony a7 to the A7II. When I found out they were adding IBIS, I was sold. IBIS is a game changer since I use a lot of legacy glass. One must see what features are added, possible eliminated and make an informed decision. If they are adding a new mode, for no apparent reason, stick to what you have and make a change when they make the upgrade more reasonable and they are adding something that you just can't live without. Sony seems to upgrade with careful thought and does not seem to make senseless upgrades.

Look at the differences.
nothing to really write home about.
Mostly minor tweaks and most are firmware upgrades other manufacturers do on existing models.
https://www.techradar.com/news/sony-alpha-a9-vs-a9-ii-the-key-differences-between-sonys-sports-oriented-camerashttps://mirrorlesscomparison.com/preview/sony-a9-vs-a9-ii/If you look carefully you see very minor changes. Again done with an eye to sell to those who trade in for the latest and greatest bragging rights. This also drives perceived sales up, not new Sony users necessarily but traders of older for newer again to just brag they have the latest.
This attitude would piss me off as what I got just a year later is outdated and a huge loss in value and could have been upgraded mostly with firmware.
In fact why not charge a nominal fee for the firmware upgrade that would make sense.
In my case, IBIs was a game changer due to legacy glass. It works great! Obviously, one has to look at what they might be gaining and make an appropriate steps.
