Beautiful aircraft. Of the almost 13 thousand built, I believe there's only around 15 left, which is better than the Lancaster bombers. Of the just under 7400 Lancaster's built, only 2 are still flying. Love that Merlin engine.

It is a beautiful aircraft. Thanks for your comment. Someone spent a lot of time and money restoring this one. I don't know how many are air worthy, but there are very few total left.

They do have a unique sound Mike. Those Turbocharged radial engines are easily recognizable. Thanks for the comment. I am sure that your wife saw them in large numbers. It would be impossible to recreate those formations now.

I was driving past the New Smyrna Beach Airport and noticed that a B-17 was coming in for a landing, so when I got to the end of the runway, I got out my trusty little Panasonic Lumix and walked up to the chain link fence where I could get a good view of the Warbird. I tried a couple of shots through the fence, but didn't get a good shot until I decided to hold my camera up over the fence. I had not seen this bird before. The B-17 that usually came her for her annual was tragically lost in a fiery crash earlier this year with 7 lost souls. There is more info on the "Aluminum Overcast" can be seen here:
https://airwingmedia.com/videos/2012/wwii-b-17-flying-fortress-bomber-aluminum-overcast/ She will join her sisters the B24 and B25 for their Annual. I will attempt to get close while they are here and get some better shots.

I got to fly on the Aluminum Overcast several years ago when the EAA flew her into Green Bay. It was quite the experience and well worth the cost.

One of the sweetest sounds on earth. As a boy, our back field abutted the airport and the N.G. still had 3 or 4 Mustangs based there ( Austin, TX). I spent a LOT of time at the fence :>)

Sometimes the difference in sound was the result of the plane returning missing major parts. They were filmed as they returned missing large parts of their wings, tail or fuselage. They were the original, "Takes a licking but keeps on ticking," piece of machinery.

Nice shots but your shutter speed is too high. The propellers are stationary in every shot. If the engines are running the props should be blurred. 1/250 to 1/320 is ideal.

I'll bet it was a great experience. Were you able to sit in the Nose Gunner's seat?

I grew up on Air Force Bases, and that sealed my love for those birds.

Yes it does Carol, as you well know. I only wish I had another minute to reset the camera before shooting. She will be here for a while so I am going to take my D500 to American Aero to pester the guys to let me get some close ups.

I rode on Aluminum Overcast last year from Oshkosh. It was an awesome experience. A few of my pics ore in my FB Osh '18 album. Hard to imagine the bravery of the young men that flew into the flak and bullets to protect our freedom.
