Crop out the wood?, perhaps.
Crop out the sky? It seems to me that the sky sets the bird apart from the rest of the photo and adds to the photo. There is some composition guidance that says that a subject needs twice was much headroom as there is space below the subject lest the photo seem top heavy.

There is also some guidance that says a photographer's best friends are his knees. A lower camera position (Or higher) might have allowed a composition where the sudden transition from earth to sky (due to it's position in the center of the photo) didn't become such an eye snag.

Please be assured though, that I , in the heat of the moment, would probably not have thought the composition through like I have the leisure of doing now as a viewer.

I'm hoping that composition eventually becomes instinctive enough that I can do it well without lengthy contemplation.
