External hard drive...
I have two WD 4TB external drives. One is my day-to-day and the second one is my backup.
I use SyncBackFree to perform mirroring on a regular basis.
https://www.2brightsparks.com/download-syncbackfree.htmlIt is truly free and the paid version does not offer features that make me want to buy it.
The entire cost of this setup is around $200.
I use WD Passports as well and have never had a problem with them.
I just purchased a 1 TB G external hard drive. I got the Solid State version. A bit pricey but worth it to me

I have used Seagate and western digital in the past.

A question I would enjoy an answer to Is;
How many Raw Images will fit on 1 TB external portable H.D.
I am considering buying an external H.D. for my Laptop and not sure what size I should buy.
Get the biggest one that fits your budget. A 4TB WD is $100 and a 2RB is about half that.
Typically any external HD is the same...one thing to consider is the drop test, i.e. will it work after dropped from 4 feet, etc...Personally I prefer solid state vs spinning disk as there are no moving parts, they last longer and retrieval & storage of data is faster

The answer is: it depends upon the size of your RAW files. As an example, I use a 1 TB HDD as a travel back up. It will hold about 43 thousand RAW files from my Olympus OMD E-M1 M2. If you are using the new Sony probably only 15 thousand.

Drive manufacturers have lots of different models/levels of drives - for the best defense against data loss, don't buy the cheap, consumer-oriented retail-packaged external drive solution. It's junk. Buy any drive with a 5 yr warranty - they are designed for data center or enterprise applications and will certainly outlast the junk. They are a little bit more expensive, but a lot more reliable.
I use WD RE or WD Black, depending on whether or not they are going to be used in a RAID configuration (WD RE) or just stand-alone. Any cheap drive I have ever purchased has broken, sometimes just after the 1 or 2 yr warranty has expired.

The price of a cheap drive is too often the cost of lost data. But the VALUE of that data can be priceless.
Backup, backup, backup.
Consider the solid state drive. The come in varying sizes, some at the TB level. No moving parts to wear out and can fit in a roomy shirt pocket.
Scott Kelby is owner and publisher of Photoshop Magazine. (kelbyone.com). He recommends and uses G-Technology Drives. They are available in all sizes at Amazon. I have 2- 4TB drives attached to my iMac right now and love them.

I use Glyph dual mirrored drives. Do some research on the different external drives and you will find that Glyph is U.S. based with a pretty good customer service reputation in the event that something goes wrong. They also have a really good warranty which includes recovery in the event that one of your drives fails.

Be careful and do some research on solid state drives as storage drives.
I have WD and LeCie and have not had any issues. You can get a 2TB on Amazon for around $60-$65 right now.

With HDs, like most everything else, you get what you pay for - there is no free lunch. You spend thousands of $ on camera equipment to do one thing - record data. Unless that data is worthless to you, do you really want to trust it to a $50 drive? You probably spent that much or more on your strap.
