Just a thought -- by the time Nikon and Canon get the auto-focus right on their mirrorless bodies, Sony will be like on their 5th generation AF system!

I added Fujifilm to my system and so far it has put the fun back into my photography and video work. I now have a quote from MPB to sell off my Nikon gear. I am also interested in the Sony A9. The problem with Nikon F mount lenses is that the auto focus will never adapt to anything very well so adding a Z system body basically means all new lenses too.

I rented a Z6 with the FTZ adapter and 24-70 S lens earlier this year. I got all my F mount lenses (Nikon, Sigma and Tamron) to work although the autofocus was not as fast as on my D750. The current Z bodies need additional maturity for me to invest in Nikon's mirrorless lineup, so the D850 may be a better choice in the short run. I have looked into selling all my Nikon gear and lenses and moving to a Sony full frame, but I would be out some bucks that I don't really want to spend now.

I have looked into getting a used Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark ii with a couple of lenses to play around for a few years while Nikon's Z cameras get ready for prime time.

I guess my question is; the IQ? Is it so much better to warrant the huge costs of loss in selling used gear, new lenses, etc, when the 810/850 do every thing very nicely. Is this GAS?? Significant new technology with sharper faster and better quality images are one thing, but are we there yet?? We all know in our deepest selves, some of the best photos are made with the simplest of cameras in the right hands at the right time. As a wildlife photographer, its all about speed on, AF, and rapid fire. I accidentally sold my d500 and still regret it.

Looking for an improvement in IQ (over the D850) is the wrong reason to adopt the mirrorless line. They have the same sensor. If you regret selling the D500 for the reasons you state, then definitely you don’t want to invest in the Z line right now. The advantages of mirrorless are many but if they are not of value to you then definitely stick with your current system and save the $.

Nikon has a Trade Up to Z promotion that is tempting me to trade in my D810. It seems that some initial AF concerns with the Z7 were resolved with a firmware update. Wasn’t sure if anyone has experience to share after switching from a D800, 810, or 850 to a Z6 or Z7. Thanks.

Why to trade? I have D750 and Z6 and each has its own purpose. D750 used for studio work and Z6 for travel and everything else. Sometimes, when I am outdoors, I have both with me, Z6 with 24-70 and D750 with 70-300 as I don't like switching lenses in less than perfect environments.

Not true, I have tested the Z6 with the adapter on 4 of my AF-S Nikon lenses plus a Sigma Art and Tamron G2 lens and the auto focus is not that good, it’s a big step down from using them on a D850 or D500, you need the Z mount lenses and they are expensive.

Not as good in what sense? Are the images less sharp? If that the case you need to talk to your dealer or Nikon direct as your copy of the camera has a problem. If it's how fast it focuses or its low light performance, we knew that going in.

I’m talking about a lens that is slower to focus and hunts back and forth before locking on even in good light and worse in low light. You can’t shoot sports, action, wildlife or even people with any success with under performing auto focus, if you are doing landscapes or snap shots it’s not a big deal.

That was a distinction that needed to be made.
Thank you for responding.

I accidentally sold my d500 and still regret it.[/quote]

That’s a coincidence, I had a D500, D810 and D850, and I realized that I really only needed two out the three cameras.
I sold the D500, thinking that the two full frame hi resolution cameras made more sense.
But I came to be concerned that I would have been better served keeping the D500 and selling the D810.
The 810 does almost everything the that the 850 does, with a few exceptions, like FPS, resolution, buffer size/speed, etc.
so the D810 is basically just a lesser version of the D850, in other words, it has no advantage that I am aware of over the D850. (besides the built in flash, which was useful for occasional wireless flash commander mode, when I didn’t feel like busting out the wireless triggers, but, the D500 also had one, so that was a wash, anyway)
But, the D500 offered me the advantages of the Dx format. I only own Nikon full frame lenses, but on the DX camera they get the advantages of the format, offering something the D850 and D810 can’t.
But then when I am having seller’s remorse, I realize that with the increased resolution of either of my 2 remaining cameras, that I do have enough extra pixels to crop my images to the D500 size. I am aware of the ability of switching the cameras image size to emulate DX format size, but your just binning a lot of pixels that way.
Now, after about a year since making that decision, I feel that I did indeed make the best decision for me. I don’t miss the D500, but it was a terrific piece of magic/art. I evolved from D100-D200-D300-Fukushima-to D500, as far as digital is concerned, before I went full frame. Funny, I was so sure that there would never need to be a better camera than the D300, or that it was even capable of being bettered.
I should know better. Every thing gets better!!! And usually more expensive, too!
FTR: started in 1972 with a Nikkormat FTn. And I have owned almost every film Nikon worth owning (IMHI)... including the F-F2-F3-F4-f5 and many many more.
One of my favorites was the F100, with the grip, it felt just right to me. My Goldilocks film camera. I also loved using the F5, but it got heavy sometimes, where as the F100 was a pleasure to carry all day in comparison.

Your story is almost an exact line as mine, sans the earlier nikons. You are completely right about the progression of tech. A factor not mentioned is the number 3, mostly needed in wildlife for quick shots w/o time to change lenses for all the variations encountered while shooting. But; like you said, it sits on the bench except when on the WL shoot, so I sold it for exactly the same reason you did. The Z6 is not even close yet. What's done is done, so I'll just live with it.

Traded in my D5 for a Z7. It was a good decision. Love the Z7.
