Through my own Stupidity, my hard was erased and I lost my Lightroom 5. I tried to download it again but it says the key code is invalid. Before I wiped the hard drive I did move all the photos and stuff from my external HD. I also downloaded my Lightroom 5 to the same thumb drive. Everything downloads Ok but my key doesn't work anymore. I checked eBay to see if there was anything available I could afford. What is available is really expensive or comes without a key code(?). Does anyone have any ideas? I would rather own an older version than pay $10 bucks every month.

Did you try Adobe? If you or they have a record of your purchase they might give you a working key.

The Adobe site has a chat tool. I'd try their technical support and see if you can determine why you're having a problem with your key.

If you can't find resolution with Adobe customer support, and you are trying to avoid paying too much, or anything at all, Darktable runs on all platforms and is free. There is a learning curve, just like any other photo editing tool, but there are great tutorials on YouTube.

Nothing wrong with the new software. This is one of the downsides of so-called "perpetual license" software. I haven't had versioning issues, incompatibility, software that breaks every now and then, software keys not working, not getting updates in a timely fashion, or even periodically paying for updates, etc ever since I started using CC.

B&H still has a few of LR 6 left around (or they did a month ago). I think they are $60.

I'm with you on this. Fixes, new function all in the same stream. It's worth twice the price.

I agree, we spend thousands of dollars on cameras and gear plus travel costs yet balk at $120 per year for the latest and greatest LR and PS. I for some reason I decided not to use LR/PS I would probably go back to PSE and upgrade every other year. Why use four or five year old software when there are better tools available at a reasonable price?

Adobe got attacked in some sort of legal battle over licensing, royalties, codecs, etc. They are not clear about the details, but the focus was on "older" software and versions. The solution, a couple months ago, included a policy of maintaining full support only on current software and dropping support on older software. I think the definition of older is two years. It may not be possible to get a fresh installation file for Lightroom 5 unless you can find someone that kept theirs as a backup.

One approach that might help you, since the older version of the software seems to be defunct, is to sign up for LR via the cloud on a temporary basis (I think there may still be a month-to-month sign up, you'll have to check), then when it downloads it should open your older, existing catalog. This will allow you to get your edited images exported as a tiff. After that you can cancel the subscription and move on to whatever other software you want to use. If you had checked the box in the Catalog Preferences that saves all edits into the file, either RAW or JPEG, then you could have simply used some other editing software that was compatible, which would be most of the higher-end software applications. Using really old software is, in general, not a good practice for the best outcomes.

I don’t know your particular financial condition. But if you are in a position to get the current subscription LR, then I would urge you to at least reconsider. The recent texture slider is just one of the many additions and modifications to the program since version 5. If you have a photo buddy who has a current version, you could try it before you make a decision.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I think I will go the B & H route; I have a credit there that should reduce that $60 price to what I could afford. Thanks again, you guys always come through DaveD65
