I agree 100% that Silver Efex blows PS away for conversion. SE has several functions that CS5 does not have. The two most useful to me are the ability to see what Zone any given section falls into, and the "structure" function which has no equivalent in CS5.

Jerry, I've got Silver efex pro and it blows photoshop away. Of course it's a dedicated program and it's not cheap. I'd say if you absolutely love black and white, invest in Silver Efex. If it's a once in a while kind of thing then you can get buy with ps.

I know that it's best to shoot in color and then convert to B&W, but is a plug-in, like Silver Efex, really better than PS alone?

Also worth a look -- perhaps not in the same league but still very good and useful at $50 is BWStyler from The Plugin Site. I like the extras effects it can apply, like simulating films and development methods. At some point I intend to get the Silver Efex plug-in, but for now this does a creditable job over & above what PS alone can do easily.

check out the flexibility and ease with regards to Silver Efex:

This is a short video that clearly illustrates the power and flexibility. To do the same sort of thing in Photoshop or another tool would definitely take a lot longer to do from what the guy ends up with.

I have Elements 10 and SilverEfex. A lot of really nice effects can be done in Elements 10, but I still believe SilverEfex does a much better job with converting to B/W. I also have found that photos converted using SilverEfex print better than those converted with Elements.
