Another interesting way to view images on a smart TV is to share a USB stick full of images and video from your router, if it supports it. I use a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. I share a 128GB flash drive over our home network. Any Mac, PC, or TV on our network can access those files.
That's important, because the TV manufacturers put the USB ports in very awkward places! With our TV over our fireplace mantel, It's risky to tilt the TV away from the wall and find the USB socket by feel!
I also have a 2010 Mac Mini connected to our smart TV, so we can watch anything we want to. It works great. It's on the network AND it has a DVD drive in it.

Another handy option if the TV supports DLNA rendering is to use SW on any computer on your network (such as Windows Media Player) to stream images to your TV. Then you can mount a folder with images (such as public pictures) on a network computer and stream them to your TV over your network.
I am rather mystified about your problem, I regularly do what you are trying to, I have three LG TV's one is "Smart" the other older ones are not. The oldest model has a USB but it's for power only so it will not display photos, the other two both work as you would like. I have a 128gb USB which has 1000's of photographs and 20 or so films, the films are MP4 and the photos are Jpeg and will work on all the TV's in the house except the older LG model. The only problem I have is finding a specific file as they come up in random order. You could try another USB with just a few photos this could help. I hope you can solve your problem soon.
Again, I marvel at the number of kind people who try to help each other in the UHH family. Thank you all for your suggestions... I have gotten many excellent threads to follow and feel the solution is near.
