every once in a while this "noise" shows up in a frame or two. I use a canon 5dmk 4 and a mk3 as well. i used to think it was an artifact from the sd card but it seems to occur regardless of which card i use... it only seems to occur when shot in jpeg not raw. just wondering if anyone else has had this problem

That is an exceptional lightning photo, The square towards the center is a real mystery. However, there are a few questions. The answers to which may lead to a solution.

Is this a timed photo? That is did you leave the shutter open for a lengthy time to capture this image?

Since it only occurs in JPEG and not Raw, you may have already answered the question. If you export the Raw as a JPEG, does it happen? You may need to try several different qualities of JPEG to determine the answer to that. It may be because of the particular compression algorithm used by your camera when creating the file.

During the exposure, do you have your eye to the viewfinder?

Hhmm, you might be on to it, I went back to Photos to check and found that this particular shot was Raw + Jpeg... the raw file does not have the artifact, the jpeg does.

No , when shooting lightning I set up my shot on tripod , try to anticipate where , set the exposure and take alot of frames, the viewfinder is covered

yes , its the pixelated square in the center and a few more artifacts towards the rt top of photo that I am on about. Did not shoot through a window,, out in the wild away from anything save jackrabbits and sagebrush!

Well, that eliminates my guess. I thought this might be light entering the camera through the viewfinder. But, if you have it covered or closed that eliminates that guess.
