A great set of this Big Boy. Downloads are terrific of this 4-8-8-4. Have yet to see one of these big boys in person so for now I'll keep enjoying the photos. Mahalo for sharing.

Thanks for looking in JoAnne. One of my daughters has bought a lot overlooking Kona and plans to retire there in a couple of years.

My favorite is the first, but I am sure glad you kept on shooting to show the details of a magnificent train I am unlikely to ever see myself.

Thanks BlueMorel. Actually, there is a Big Boy on display at the railroad museum in Green Bay. It's inside and a little crowded for pics but you can get a good feel for the size of it.

Trivia: When I saw it years ago the docent I talked to said that during the years it was at the LA County Fairplex "RailGiants Train Museum" when they used it for parties they actually allowed toddlers to climb inside the firebox.

Thanks Robert. The one on display here in Omaha (4023) is currently behind fencing but out in the open unfortunately.

Wow! Excellent job at freezing the locomotive!!
Enjoyed in inspecting the valve gearing on both engines with subtle differences.
Also, noted the two differences in the way the oilers were driven.
So, thank you for capturing this detail!!!
Pat

Thanks Jay Pat. I used 1/4000 at f/4.5, auto ISO. The thing was really moving without much load, you can see the radius bars were in "high gear". It was running about 15 minutes late and maybe the engineer was trying to make up a little time. The front oiler chain system looks a little squirrely but the rear one looks to be connected to the valve train somehow. I didn't notice the differences in the valve gearing, I will look at them closer.

Thanks Jimmy. Yes, it's a 4-8-8-4 articulated locomotive. UP also has an operational Challenger 4-6-6-4 articulated I used for my avatar.

Nice set of photographs. What an incredible piece of machinery. It's amazing what one can accomplish by boiling some water.

I posted these earlier today in the Railroad segment but am afraid not many will see them there. I used a 16mm lens but was standing way too close, about 15 feet, when it roared by. Below are some of the pics.

What a thrill these must have been to capture! SPEED on a rail! One man's opinion is you were 10 feet too far away for the first shot. 16mm beg to be much closer than you were. However, being that close would have ruined your chances for the other views. A compromise brought you all the shots, nicely done. The Silver Streak lives again. Thanx, love your subject.

She has 16 drivers, not eight!
